5.0 out of 5 stars I would recommend it to anyone who wants a complete exposition of ...
Fascinating and provocative, iterative and very well illustrated . All you want to know about the RedPlanet, and enough to make me want more. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a complete exposition of the history, observation and exploration of Mars. As an aerospace scientist, l rate it the best I have seen for the money, and highly addictive reading-- I keep going back and finding more. ONCE AGAIN, GET IT, if not for yourself ,for your children and grandchildren.
4.0 out of 5 stars A Mars book worth its value
This is a fine example of a book which covers all aspects of its subject, in this case the Red Planet.Superb in written and illustrated material. I could not find any fault in its production and recommend it highly to anyone wanting to learn about this fascinating world that deserves exploration by robots and, eventually, humans.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for Mars fans
I wanted an up-to-date account of mars exploration. This book met my expectations. Very well illustrated and a rigorous and informative text.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.
The book provides a great summary of the history of Mars exploration, from armchairs and telescopes up to real wheels-on-the-ground stuff. It also covers how ideas about the habitability of Mars changed through time as more and more information presented itself, and how people like Lowell refused to accept it.However, there are a few things which make this a '4 out of 5' and not a '5 out of 5' review.1. Images with small print (eg, pages 51, 77, 96) should have a web-link so that readers can actually read the tables, notes, columns, etc. on the pictures.2. On pages 91 and 106 he mentions magnetic minerals. What minerals? As a geologist I want to know.3. On page 105 he mentions a conglomerate rock: a photo would be useful here.4. On page 137 he mentions ‘falling snow’. Again, an image would be useful.5. On page 139 there is NO SCALE on the image.6. On page 142 he mentions carbon isotope ratios: which isotopes?7. On page 144 he mentions methane being made by a reaction between olivine and water. As neither of these compounds contain carbon, telling us how this happens would be a good idea.8. In Chapter 7 he mentions sci-fi ideas such as ‘terraforming’. It would have been a good idea to explain how unfeasible these ideas are, given Mars’ low gravity which cannot hold onto much of an atmosphere, and its lack of a magnetic field, which means what little atmosphere it does have is being constantly stripped away by the Solar Wind.9. Finally, THERE IS NO INDEX.

My son loves it
Fully satisfies the curiosity of a Mars enthusiast.
Top Class Book.
This is one of the best books about Mars I have ever bought. For anyone looking for some context from which to study the very latest Mars missions it is ideal. There is more detail than I was expecting but written in a clear and easy to understand manner. Plenty of photos and helpful illustrations. Up to date to about 2018 from which point it is easy to follow developments. Highly recommended.
