Bradt Albania (Travel Guide)

Description:

This new, fully revised seventh edition of Bradt's Albania remains the most authoritative standalone guide to what is still a relatively little known part of Europe.

Coverage is comprehensive, starting in the capital, Tirana, then moving through central, northern and southern Albania to provide all the information needed for a successful trip.

Included are knowledgeable and rigorously researched historical and archaeological background, detailed notes on popular and less well-known hiking routes and other outdoor activities, and specialist contributions on wildlife, military history and other topics. An unparalleled wealth of practical advice for the independent traveller is also offered.

Albania has something to offer almost everyone. Many come for the spectacular, unspoilt mountain scenery and the hiking and cycling opportunities. Others are interested in the country's heritage, such as the Ottoman cities of Gjirokastra and Berati (both UNESCO World Heritage Sites), the many outstanding archaeological sites, and the Byzantine religious art in the medieval churches and in museums in Tirana, Korça and Berati. Beaches such as Dhërmiu and Jala in the south are popular with young backpackers, while in high season the resorts are full of Albanian-speaking Kosovars and Macedonians.

Ornithologists have long been attracted to Albania, even during the Communist period when the country was all but closed to most foreign visitors, thanks to its many different habitats and the fact it lies on several migration routes. For city slickers, lively Tirana offers shopping malls, cycle paths, museums, art galleries and historic buildings, yet in the countryside, especially in the mountains, villagers still live much as their grandparents did, tending their goats and sheep, spinning wool and making their own cheese and yogurt. Many villagers have opened up their homes as guest houses, offering a wonderful opportunity to experience local culture first-hand.

All of this - and more - is covered in Bradt's Albania, the ideal companion for a perfect trip.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guidebook with Thorough Research

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } Without a doubt an essential companion to any trip to Albania. Bradt guides are incredibly detailed, thoroughly researched and well written, and the Albania guide is no exception.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide

G.M. · 3 July 2024

There are very few decent guides for Albania - but this one is great! It's clear, thorough and entertainingly written. There's an excellent section on the geopolitical, historical and cultural history of the nation, and the guide is divided into regional sections with a big section on just Tirana.I would say 'don't leave home without this guide if you're heading off to this little visited corner of the Balkans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good information, layout leaves some to be desired

J.E. · 17 May 2025

Provided good maps and information about each city, including highlighting some lesser-seen locations. Could have used a bit of color to focus more on each page

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, and the most current guide available (but still a couple of years out of date)

t. · 26 June 2024

Excellent overall coverage of the country, with very useful focussed sections on specific local areas. Would recommend as it is the most comprehensive and current guide available.

informative good coverage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent

K.C. · 11 June 2024

Really useful guide, though inevitably some things such as entrance prices are already out of date. But informative, history of people and areas good background.

Good information

4.0 out of 5 stars Great guide to Albania

S.R. · 1 April 2024

The publication provides information about the history and geography of Albania as well as tips on getting around and what to see do and what to eat.

Albanien Land der Skipetaren und der Krauskopfpelikane

G. · 24 March 2024

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } Für unsere Zwecke war dieser Reiseführer über Albanien vollkommen ausreichend.

Important details in guide for anyone planning to visit Albania

L. · 22 July 2025

I was thinking about planning a visit to Albania with a small group and wanted to find out about the various places to be visited as described in the itinerary. This book described extra details of each stop as some of the best places to visit. This allowed me to be more confident in reserving the trip coming up and gave me a foretaste of the importance of these places. I expect it to be a valuable aid during my visit . I do recommend this travel guide .
