Bats: An illustrated guide to all species

Description:

"Meshing deft scientific text with Tuttle’s sumptuous images, it’s a superb introduction to the baroque morphologies and flying prowess of these beguiling beasts."- Nature

Bats: An Illustrated Guide to All Species looks in detail at the more than 1,300 species known today.

Nocturnal, fast-flying and secretive, they are
endlessly fascinating, yet extremely difficult to observe and catalogue. The diversity of bats is both rich and underestimated and the threats they face from humans are very real. This guide illuminates the world of bats and reveals their true nature as intelligent, social and deeply misunderstood creatures.

This extravagantly illustrated handbook features the work of famed nature photographer Merlin D. Tuttle and in-depth profiles of 288 bats, from the Large Flying Fox, which has a wingspan of more than five feet, to the Bumblebee Bat, contender for the world’s smallest mammal. Bats includes close-up images of these animals’ delicate and intricate forms and faces, each shaped by evolution to meet the demands of an extraordinarily specialized life, and a thorough introduction which explores their natural history and unique adaptations to life on the wing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Bats!

J. · 22 May 2023

This is a fantastic book for anyone who loves or has an interest in bats. It covers many species with nice information and absolutely epic photography. Bats have always been a favourite mammal of mine and this book is just a lovely, sumptuous book to dive into. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book with stunning illustrations & full descriptions.

b. · 25 May 2020

A wonderful book, stunning illustrations, beautiful ( new) condition, clear introductory explanations, & detailed descriptions of multiple carefully categorised species of bat.Have at last found that the vampire bats ( of which there are only 3 out of 1384 species) live in central & south americas.Would have liked to know WING span of various bats, and how their body length is measured. My only quibble would be that not categorised for the layman - viz vampires, insect eating, frugivores.Had to find each species and put in categories useful to me.But a lot of clear information, that I’d been looking for for years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant

Great book. Poor packaging. Book to heavy and not fully protected. One corner was damaged.Additionally, the delivery driver placed it on the wet ground and the packaging acted as a wick. The cover of the book became wet. Had to dry it out.

Can't be used as a field guide but illustration is quite good...

Incredible resource.Awesome photos to match descriptions. Our 10 year old grandson buried his nose into this guide and had to be reminded he had other Birthday Gifts to open.

This is a great book
