"The success of this book is down to the authors' insightful look at mastering the aesthetics of landscape photography and revealing how to create images that go beyond being purely representational. Using their own photographs as examples, Mark Bauer and Ross Hoddinott highlight established compositional rules - such as vanishing points, the golden section and visual balance - and show how they can be used as a framework to develop your own creative style. Consisting of nine thoughtfully written chapters, beautifully reproduced images and engaging design, The Art of Landscape Photography is a wonderful guide to the essential elements needed to produce artful images. The book's final chapter, Developing a Personal Style, touches on more experimental photographic techniques, including using minimalist, impressionistic and abstract." --Outdoor Photography

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book - a constant source of reference and inspiration
This is a fantastic contribution to the field, looking more specifically at aesthetics and what makes a good landscape photograph. I’ve had it for nine months and regularly go back to it for reference and inspiration.I think the book could be strengthen more by adding in more examples of ‘bad’ landscape photography and photos which the authors have taken which they acknowledge haven’t worked. I say this because for all of the wonderful photos in the book they would have made numerous efforts previously that they weren’t too happy with, either because of composition, conditions etc.One key piece of learning that I have come way, from this book, and through practice, is that it is valuable to note (when scouting, visiting etc) what a scene might look like at its optimum eg season, conditions, position of the sun, flora and vegetation and tidal situation for seascapes etc. Perhaps more important to spend time doing this and making a diary note for the future, rather than simply spend the time shooting and hoping to be satisfied.with what you come home with. It saves on wasted trips in the future. Similarly, when exploring a scene rather than photographing it, it helps to eliminate bad compositions, so thorough scouting and exploration is important. By this I mean “climb the rocks as little higher, walk around to the other side, follow that little path and see what’s there”. Bed to do all of this on a dull day rather than have it play on your mind when you’re there at the optimal time. Optimal conditions are rare but make all the difference to landscape photography if you have a strong composition to begin with.Great book, as is the workshop book (which is better still in my view)
5.0 out of 5 stars Adds detail about the artistic side of photography
I think this is one of the best photography books I have read (and I have a good collection of books to draw on). It is extremely well written, with some very good explanations of some of the more technical sides of picture making. I particularly like the emphasis on the creative side, and how to determine the mood and impact of an image, and more importantly, the emotional response from the viewer. The different 'rules of composition' are discussed clearly, with the clear implication that these are only guidelines and not to be slavishly followed. An ideal book for anyone returning to photography after a break or anyone who knows their aperture from their f number. At the current price a steal.
5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing tips
I've only read the first few pages and picked up really good tips already. I've been taking landscapes for years and I really feel that this book will take me to the next level. Highly recommended
5.0 out of 5 stars Very, very accessible and informative
This book is quite simply the best photography book that I have ever read. The text is vey clearly written with very informative explantations of the content covered. The index of photographs at the end with shooting settings really helps in your understanding of the use of your camera, it really does give little nuggets of information that you could otherwise miss. Forget other encyclopaedia type publications, this book really is a little gem. Thank you Mark and Ross.
4.0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone wanting to improve their landscape photography.
I bought this as a gift for someone one else. The book came highly recommended and the person who received it was delighted and has found it very helpful with his landscape photography. A lovely book that covers everything you need to know to help improve your technique.
5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable and informative read
I took this away with me for holiday reading and I found it much more useful than I expected. Some of the equipment and post processing overlaps with the Landscape workshop book but there is plenty of original content too. Goes way beyond the classic 'rule of thirds'. I had the pleasure of spending a day with the authors on an RPS away day recently and found them to be every bit as friendly in person as they are in print. Highly recommended.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This was bought as a present. Recipient absolutely delighted. An amazing book for budding photographers. This item was ordered a couple of days before Christmas and arrived the next day. I was also highly delighted at the speed of delivery.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic advice for beginner and intermediate landscape photographers.
Ross Hoddinott writes perfectly for the beginner and intermediate photographer. Full of fantastic photographs and advice on how to improve your landscape photography this is not a coffee table book full of images but no information, this book is full of clearly written advice that you can put into practice next time you venture out with the camera.

This is one of the best landscape photography books available. Highly recommend!
Probably the best landscape technique book on the market
I have been an avid photographer for more than four decades, and have written many published articles and several books (now out of print) on the subject. My favorite is landscape photography, and when I was younger (OK, in my twenties) I thought I knew all there was to know about landscape photography, but a chance meeting with a fellow photographer at a gallery show showed me there was still a lot to learn. So, over the years I buy photography books in the hope that each will add something to my skillset, or give me new challenges or ways to look at photography. One of the better landscape photography books is this one!The book is not really intended for novices who don't know their way around their gear. The book assumes you know how to use your camera, filters, and so on, and doesn't deal with camera technology very much, but it does spend the majority of the book looking at technique. There's the expected discussion (throughout the book) on composition, which is to be expected, but also a lot more on the emotional value of the photos and how to elicit a reaction from the viewers. This is where the technical discussions come in, such as looking at the effect various filters or post-production tweaking can enhance an image and elicit more emotion. In general, it's more about taking the photo correctly from the start than Photoshoping the image afterwards (a particular sore point with me; too many photographers relay on editing to correct bad photos, when it's a lot better to get the image right at the start!). There's a lot of examples of what the author is talking about throughout the book. Indeed, this is one of the more heavily illustrated landscape photography books I know of, which is good!My bookshelves contain dozens of books on landscape photography. But, if a friend asked me which one book they should read to become a better photographer, this is the one I would recommend. While assumptions are made about basic knowledge, they are safe assumptions, I think, and let the author focus on the subject of actually taking photographs, not how to use a camera. And maybe that's the key to what makes this book so useful for people of all skill levels, including grumpy old photographers like me!
Good ideas book for landscape photography
Well laid out and illustrated with many perspectives. Only issue is that it is not written for mirrorless cameras and their innards. Still conceptually useful.Update: to clear 5* despite my comment before on mirrorless. Great for getting across a variety of photographic ideas irrespective of camera. Much enjoyed this book and would Iove a followup by the authors!
