“You’re my best friend, Bella!” I shouted.

“You’re mine!” she shouted back.

“I won’t forget you!” I yelled.

“Never, never, never!” she hollered back.

Bella has a secret – one that she is very good at keeping. The secret is a den, hidden among trees on a muddy slope. Nearby, some foxes have a den of their own.

But when the secret is betrayed, the foxes’ lives are put in danger, and so is a
special friendship.

Born in Knotty Ash, Liverpool, Berlie Doherty is the youngest of three children. She has been a social worker, a journalist, a teacher, and, for the past fifteen years, a writer.

Berlie has twice won the prestigious Carnegie Medal, for ‘Grannie was a Buffer Girl’ in 1987 and for ‘Dear Nobody’ in 1992. She lives in the Derbyshire Peak District.

Ellie Snowdon is a children’s illustrator and author from South Wales. Ellie graduated from UWE Bristol with a first in Drawing and Applied Arts before completing her MA in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art. In 2015, Ellie’s books, Lost and Found were highly commended for the Macmillan Prize for Illustration. Her first picture book, Great Bunny Bakes, was published in 2018, and she continues to collaborate with many prominent authors including Helen Peters on the Jasmine Green Rescues series; and best-selling author Laura Wood, illustrating for The Animals of Madame Malone’s Music Hall.
