Native: Life in a Vanishing Landscape (A TIMES BESTSELLER)

Description:

Shortlisted for the Wainwright Prize for UK Nature Writing 2020

'Remarkable, and so profoundly enjoyable to read ... Its importance is huge, setting down a vital marker in the 21st century debate about how we use and abuse the land' - Joyce McMillan, Scotsman

Desperate to connect with his native Galloway, Patrick Laurie plunges into work on his family farm in the hills of southwest Scotland. Investing in the oldest and most traditional breeds of Galloway cattle, the Riggit Galloway, he begins to discover how cows once shaped people, places and nature in this remote and half-hidden place. This traditional breed requires different methods of care from modern farming on an industrial, totally unnatural scale.

As the cattle begin to dictate the pattern of his life, Patrick stumbles upon the passing of an ancient rural heritage. Always one of the most isolated and insular parts of the country, as the twentieth century progressed, the people of Galloway deserted the land and the moors have been transformed into commercial forest in the last thirty years. The people and the cattle have gone, and this withdrawal has shattered many centuries of tradition and custom. Much has been lost, and the new forests have driven the catastrophic decline of the much-loved curlew, a bird which features strongly in Galloway's consciousness. The links between people, cattle and wild birds become a central theme as Patrick begins to face the reality of life in a vanishing landscape.

Review

'In this tender, lyrical book, Patrick Laurie considers what it means to really belong to a place. Throughout, the mud, blood and sweat of the farm are brought vividly to life, and each sentence is charged with passion for its subject' -- Malachy Tallack

'Patrick Laurie is a wonderful writer. He has written a hymn of love to his native land' -- James Rebanks

'Patrick Laurie's neighbours looked on in amusement when he turned the clock back to follow his grandfather's way of rearing cattle. But the old ways are paying off and he is now the proud owner of a thriving rare breed herd - and seen the return of threatened wildlife to his land' - Sunday Post

'I simply adore this book!' -- Polly Pullar

'I work at Forum Books in Corbridge and got a proof of this - it's the most incredible book I can recall reading - prose to compare with Macfarlane. Staggering, should win prizes' -- Bookseller, Forum Books

'Native is described as 'a hymn of love to his native land'. It's an apt description for a wonderful book... a poignant and thought-provoking read, I loved it' -- Matt Johnson, LoveReading

'Galloway, past and present, is the bedrock of this book, a granite foundation on which Laurie is to build his future... an unflinching account of what it takes to turn into a farmer, bearing callouses, bruises and scars.... moving as well as inspirational. This Galloway farm might be just one stamp in an album, but if a butterfly wing can cause a hurricane, what about a rampaging bull?' -- Rosemary Goring, Herald

'A farmer with a poet's eye is a rare thing indeed, and this is a rare breed of a book: an elegy to a vanishing landscape but one not without hope, and to be greatly treasured' - Daily Mail

'[A] beautifully written memoir, a mesmerising account of a year of back-breaking labour, personal despair and piercing moments of joy... unforced and utterly authentic.' FIVE STAR REVIEW, Mail on Sunday

'Brilliant and Beautiful... This is a book about a place you will probably have never visited: but you should read it nonetheless because what it says has a wider importance, about some of what we have got wrong in the way we respect nature and farming and what we might get right if we change our ways. it is also that most valuable of things, an escape to an open land where curlew still cry and the wind and rain cut in from the sea and city life feels a million miles away' -- Julian Glover, London Evening Standard

'Laurie writes in beautiful detail about the landscape and animals surrounding him. The book represents an ongoing battle between progress and conservation in which the farming industry is integral. A thoughtful read about a man's love of his homeland' - Scottish Field

'A bittersweet portrait of a difficult and disappearing way of life...Rich with the sense of place and balanced between solastalgia and practicality' - Shiny New Books

'Laurie has an authentic ability to balance the pains and joys of small farming. ... [Native] works a remarkable balancing act/ the blackened fingernail, bruised by bustling cattle, presses down on a key as richly ambiguous as the curlew's cry' --Brian Morton, Times Literary Supplement

'He's a keen observer, of nature and of the general ebb and flow of the world, and he writes with a seemingly effortless lyricism about what he sees... A charming evocation of the harsh realities of farming in the modern world, and the difficulties of marrying food production and conservation' - --
Geographical Magazine

'For as long as anyone can remember there have been Lauries farming in Galloway.
Native is Patrick Laurie's account of returning home and trying to establish a farm on a 30 acre plot. This is a memoir born out of moments of wonder and pain ... It is not so much a lament for a lost way of being, but the loving story of trying to find it again' --The Times, Nature Books of the Year 2020

5.0 out of 5 stars A stirring, emotional requiem for the love of the land

J.G. · 17 September 2021

Beautiful. An honest depiction of a lonely attempt to work the land in sympathy with the wildlife that occupies it. It's not a crusade of a misguided do-gooder, or the rallying cry of a rampant conservationist, but a yearning need to be a part of the soul of a rugged and beautiful world. Turning away from the notion that only speed and profit margins matter, accepting the deficiencies of the land goes hand in hand with a personal struggle to cope with the life path we are given. He takes joy in the smallest atoms of beauty drawn from the natural world slowly encouraged to return to its former diversity. And all crafted in a swirling ballad of expressive writing that exquisitely draws you into the glorious countryside of Bonny Gallowa'. I shall read it again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, great read about farming and nature

d. · 10 May 2020

If you like the writing of award-winning John Lewis-Stempel on the challenges of farming the "right" way and the challenges of treating nature with care and love, then you will love this book too. Set in Galloway (rather than Hereford) its evokes very clearly the challenges of farming with care for wildlife and the monumental effort and sacrifices required to make it work. I really enjoyed reading this and I hope that the author succeeds in meeting his objectives and overcoming life's challenges!

4.0 out of 5 stars Farming alongside nature

D.R. · 29 August 2020

An account of farming native Galloway cattle interspersed with the author's research and obsession with the fast disappearing curlew. A poignant story showing love of the land, its wildlife and its inhabitants, both human and animal. A wonderful evocation of life in Galloway contrasting the modern with the old and almost forgotten.

5.0 out of 5 stars patrick lawrie cares about the countryside and its wildlife.

j.m. · 4 September 2020

the author is a true conservationist, and guess what? he is a shooting man all his books and articles he writes are well worth reading ,there is more to game shooting than pulling the trigger, as you will discover as you read his books, a good few game shots should take the trouble to read about the perilous state of blackcock, curlew, and other iconic birds which the upland keepers, and farmers are desparately trying to save(please note rspb) without a great deal of help from respective governments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent

a.d. · 31 October 2022

Almost a meditation on man , landscape and beasts and how they can work together. Very well written, quite lyrical but rooted in reality

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly important book, a first class account of how food and environment can work in tandem.

A. · 7 March 2023

If it were possible to make this compulsory reading then the future of the countryside would be assured and shared and enjoyed. A remarkable piece of work.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting account of an attempt to restore more traditional farming in Galloway

J.F.G.S. · 21 September 2020

This is an interesting book, which discusses the author's wish to restore more traditional farming in Galloway, and to preserve a landscape in which curlews can live. It - like other books concerned with 'alternative' farming - is well-written and at times moving. But it does not convey clearly whether what the author was doing could have been economically self-sustaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting reading

M.J. · 12 May 2021

The book was not quite what I was expecting, but it was still an enjoyable and interesting read.

Enjoyable read.

J. · 12 December 2022

Great read. Do not order Galloway - it’s the same book renamed. I hate it when publishers do that.

Native - A Return to Roots

J. · 30 June 2021

This poignant, endearing portrait of life on a Galloway, Scotland, farm is unlike any other book I have read. After 31 years teaching English, that says a great deal. I was hooked on the first page and remained hooked until the last page. Lyrical and tender, insightful and at times foreboding, Native looks at the changing landscape of one man's home and details all the ways he refuses to go quietly along. I couldn't resist the telling of his story and couldn't stop cheering for him.

Good depiction of the highs and lows of farming

P. · 22 September 2022

I saw this writer on Landward and his book was mentioned so I decided to order it and am glad I did. It was well written, with has wonderful descriptions of farm lands as well as the local cattle and birds.

A look at Scotland life

M. · 17 June 2021

Loved the development of his lifestyle and love of nature. As I am familiar with Scotland the place names etc did not put me off. His concern for changing nature is off interest to me. Farming, nature, and lifestyle are topics he uses to depict his life. It iscavtrue prize winner if these are topics deR to you.

Wonderful book.
