Easy Electronics (Make: Handbook)

Description:

About this item:

This is the simplest, quickest, least technical, most affordable introduction to basic electronics. No tools are necessary--not even a screwdriver. Easy Electronics should satisfy anyone who has felt frustrated by entry-level books that are not as clear and simple as they are supposed to be.

Brilliantly clear graphics will take you step by step through 12 basic projects, none of which should take more than half an hour. Using alligator clips to connect components, you see and hear immediate results. The hands-on approach is fun and intriguing, especially for family members exploring the projects together.

The 12 experiments will introduce you to switches, resistors, capacitors, transistors, phototransistors, LEDs, audio transducers, and a silicon chip. You'll even learn how to read schematics by comparing them with the circuits that you build.

No prior knowledge is required, and no math is involved. You learn by seeing, hearing, and touching. By the end of Experiment 12, you may be eager to move on to a more detailed book. Easy Electronics will function perfectly as a prequel to the same author's bestseller, Make: Electronics.

All the components listed in the book are inexpensive and readily available from online sellers. A very affordable kit has been developed in conjunction with the book to eliminate the chore of shopping for separate parts. A QR code inside the book will take you to the vendor's web site.

Concepts include:

  • Transistor as a switch or an amplifier
  • Phototransistor to function as an alarm
  • Capacitor to store and release electricity
  • Transducer to create sounds from a timer
  • Resistor codes
  • A miniature light bulb to display voltage
  • The inner workings of a switch
  • Using batteries and resistors in series and parallel
  • Creating sounds by the pressure of your finger
  • Making a matchbox that beeps when you touch it

And more. Grab your copy and start experimenting

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy Electronics - an hour's worth, maybe?

A great book, for absolute non electronics types who wish to start learning about this weird subject. However, it's all very simple and basic starter stuff that should be the first chapter of a much larger book. I believe it's aimed at under tens and, as such, should be much cheaper.I recommend it, if you are a complete noodle, like me, about electronics. But don't expect too much for your money as you will learn everything in about an hour, at most.

Claro, sencillo y asequible

A very important beginners book - do not overlook this!

I’ve been looking for many years to get an introduction into electronics. Most of them want to jump into Arduinos & programming, which isn’t what I’m looking for right now. Also for what it’s worth I am a grown man with a high degree science background just nothing in electronics and I wanted a crash course introduction into the basics. This is it.Although it appears to be written for children, adults will get a lot of knowledge out of this. Do not underestimate it.Once you have completed this book, go onto the next book which is called Make: Electronics by the same author. Go through the cost & trouble to get the component kits and follow along hands-on. You will not regret it and you will get the knowledge you need by a highly skilled but easy to understand instructor.

Too simple !

I love the small landscape comic book format Make is experimenting with in its "Handbook" series.I also really like that this book includes a QR code that takes you to a one-stop shop for buying all the parts you need to work through it, as well as a traditional printed parts list. This is the right philosophy for interfacing online and traditional printed content: The book is a complete durable resource in and of itself, but has online support for the sake of convenience. In ten years, the links may be dead, but the links are not essential to understand and use the book--they just make it a bit easier to get what you need.Likewise, designing a tool-free introductory electronics curriculum is a great idea that's very well executed here. You don't need high-priced branded kits with patented connectors to learn this stuff. Alligator clips and old-fashioned through-hole components will get you there just as well, for a heckuva lot less, without lining the pockets of a bunch of middlemen. Finally, I want to call out Charles Platt's talents as an author and illustrator. He has a great gift for clear, precise, memorable prose, and also for juxtaposing words and images on a page. As I understand, this book was both written and illustrated by the man himself. He's a treasure.
