5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
A labour of love by the authors, bringing together accounts of folk remedies from scattered historical sources. Very useful index of ailments as well as the scientific and vernacular names of plants. Highly recommended.
5.0 out of 5 stars Historical herbal
This is a very comprehensive survey of herbs and the history of their use, but if you are after information as to how to use herbs yourself it doesn't go into doses or which part of the plant to extract the active ingredient from.
1.0 out of 5 stars Consider looking ar another book!
May be of use if you already have a wide knowledge of hedgrow plants but for those who don't but wish to learn about them this is of little use. There are six pages of assorted colour photos in the middle of the book showing some plants. Not possible in my opinion to tell the difference in two of the photos between the sweet nicely and the ?poisonous Hemlock pages 230/240. Plants are listed maybe up to six pages long before a pencil line drawing of an occasional plant. Not good enough for my needs I'm afraid. Will continue looking for a book that shows a good photo of plant on one page and then goes on to give details of it on following pages. That way I have a chance of learning to recognise plants that I see each day while out walking in Co Waterford and further afield.

Arrived on time, present for someone else who seemed delighted with it.
Ethnobotany for europeans--finally!
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } I absolutely adore this book. I work in a laboratory that focuses on native american herbs and wanted to break free of the pack somewhat. While there is, naturally, some overlap in use between the two cultures, there are some uses and herbs that are not discussed in north american herbals. A must have for anyone serious about herbology!
A great book for Herbalists and Historians
This is a book that herbalists and those interested in herbal lore will find valuable. I will likely use it as inspiration when I write future fiction and non-fiction about the Celtic lands.
