The Typewriter Revolution – A Typist`s Companion for the 21st Century

Description:

What do thousands of kids, makers, poets, artists, steampunks, hipsters, activists and musicians have in common? They love typewriters―the magical, mechanical contraptions that are enjoying a surprising second life in the 21st century, striking a blow for self-reliance, privacy and coherence against dependency, surveillance and disintegration. The Typewriter Revolution documents the movement and provides practical advice on how to choose a typewriter, how to care for it and what to do with it―from National Novel Writing Month to letter-writing socials, from type-ins to typewritten blogs, from custom-painted typewriters to typewriter tattoos. It celebrates the unique quality of everything typewriter, fully-illustrated with vintage photographs, postcards, manuals and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for typosphere fans!

C. · 31 October 2023

As a collector of vintage typewriters over the last four years (I have five), this is exactly the sort of ‘reference’ book I was looking for. Extremely well written and beautifully illustrated, the sort of book you can just dip into every day. The author is very knowledgeable and his enthusiasm for those wonderful machines comes across throughout. The section on typewriter care is very useful. I am so glad there is a resurgence of interest in typewriters; smart phones and tablets are all well and good (yes I have them myself), but NOTHING beats using a typewriter!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must by for any enthusiast!

For me using typewriter is NOT because of digital detox or anything of a fashion, because I don't own pc and not mobile phone. I use typewiters if I need types document and also letters(but I mainly write letters with my handwriting). Still, it is VERY informative book, encouraging book and I hope and know for sure others will love to read it. It is well written and with a lot of info. I have 8 typewriters(all manual) sand some in that book like my 50's Remington standard. Anyway -a must by for any enthusiast!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Typewriter Lovers!

A.T. · 20 July 2017

Rarely do you come across a volume whose physical attributes match its subject matter for both style and interest - but this is one such volume. Its weight, quality, typeface, illustrations, semi-flexible hardback, even the delightful red-and-black-ribbon bookmark ooze top-notch attention to detail. Then the subject matter itself is fascinating materials superbly presented! If you are a complete beginner seeking to choose your first machine, or someone seeking to repair or clean a typewriter in order to restore it to use, if you want to know more about the history of the machine's development, or to discover something of the global renaissance in typing as an act of defiance in the digital age - well then this book is for you! More importantly, if you didn't come to the book thinking you wanted to know about the use of typewriters in street poetry etc... somehow Richard Polt's engaging prose will soon have you interested and wanting to know more! One warning though - I bought this book owning one typewriter... I already now have five... use them all... and browsing ebay or car-boot sales will never be the same again! Hold on, is that an early Smith-Corona over there? Must dash! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Long live the revolution

This is a great hymn of praise to the typewriter and those who continue to use it for what it was meant for, writing and creating. Practical advice on how to buy and look after a typewriter combines with a most satisfyingly subversive manifesto. Up the revolution!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic!

Having trained as a secretary in the 70's on a manual office typewriter, I purchased this for nostalgic reasons rather than because I thought it would be 'hip' but apparently it is! Have been 'dipping in' and out of it since purchased and have enjoyed reading it. It has now inspired me to hunt down a vintage portable and get typing!

excellent book, the author is American so obviously has a USA bias, but certainly no worse for that.. It is excellent for browsing. I enjoy picking it up and reading sections at random. I have a small collection of 12 machines and it is good to read about fellow enthusiasts. The book is well bound and printing and photographs are to a high standard. All in all, a worthwhile buy. Thank you.

'The Typewriter Revolution – A Typist`s Companion for the 21st Century' written by Richard Polt, is a book which is all about the nostalgic machine. The book answers all the questions if a person is interested in buying a typewriter as it will give an overview of various machines. The author of this book came up with a manifesto which clearly mentions "THE REVOLUTION WILL BE TYPEWRITEN" has emerged as a success, prompting people to come back to these good-old, nostalgic machines. Overall, it's an excellent book.

Enjoyably written, very informative, beautifully published

This book comprehensively covers the subject of typewriters at a fairly high level - history, acquisition, maintenance, modern relevance and culture - in a clear, accessible style that is highly informative without getting nerdy. The book itself is physically very attractive and of unusually high quality. Anyone interested in typewriters will be glad to have this book beside them as both an inspiration and a reference.

An elegant tool, from a more civilized age. (With apologies to Obi Wan for adapting his words.)

T.A. · 14 June 2023

A little of the history of the typewriter, but much more on the philosophy of the people who return to typewriters, and their many reasons for doing so. By turns serious and funny, some passages written with (I surmise) his tongue firmly in his cheek, but a great read all round. And if you already prefer your typewriter to a computer keyboard, you will find that you are not alone. Amply illustrated with pictures of typewriters and their users and their writings. A "how to" on fixing glitches, more information on the typosphere and where it is going, and manifesto of the return to "machines of loving grace", a line taken from a poem by Richard Brautigan and echoed by others as it applies to typewriters.Even if you don't have a typewriter you should read this book for the enthusiasm and enjoyment of his subject that the author so well presents.
