About the Author

Elizabeth Verdick is the author of more than 30 highly acclaimed books for children and teenagers, including books in the Toddler Tools(TM) board book series, the Best Behavior(TM) series for young children, and the Laugh & Learn(TM) series for preteens. Her most recent titles include Pacifiers Are Not Forever and See You Later, Procrastinator! (with Pamela Espeland). Elizabeth lives with her husband, daughter, son, and five pets near St. Paul, Minnesota. Marieka Heinlen received her BFA at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and also studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. She launched her career as a children's book illustrator with the award-winning Hands Are Not for Hitting. I bought this to help as my little one is suffering from separation anxiety when I leave him at Nursery. He is 16 months old now, and has been attending Nursery sporadically (due to illness) since he was 10 months old. The stopping and starting there was making it difficult for him to adjust, so I bought this book and pulled it out when he was in the mood for reading. He was reluctant at first due to the lack or interactive elements in the book (e.g. lift flaps etc) so I've had to find ways to make it a bit more of gripping read as he is still very young and doesn't yet have much language. After a while though, he was choosing this book from the pile and now likes to act out some of the text (big wave goodbye). I would recite the book from memory when dropping him off at Nursery and last week we made real progress where he waved goodbye to me, despite still crying. He is starting to understand that if I leave, I will always be back. I credit the book for that.

My niece at just over 2.5 yr suffered major separation anxiety getting dropped off at Montessori. I got this little book and took a sharpie to convert the dad into a mom since she has two moms and added a little extra text here and there to support her anxiety. She loves this book and now loves school and feels secure! What a great little book!

Really Helped Seperation Anxiety

My 18 month old was really struggling with separation anxiety. Tears and meltdowns every time we dropped him off at Parents Day Out program. We read this book together every day using his teachers name for the teacher and reminding him that Nana would pick him up at the end of the day. It was perfect for him. Within a week the tears stopped, no meltdowns on arrival. Now he goes and gets the book every time we load up his backpack for “school” the next day.Not a lot of words to read just good pictures and teaching points for parents to remind little ones.

The media could not be loaded. Very cute and simple. It would be especially helpful for daycare drop off preparation. Just FYI, the pictures show a dad dropping off his daughter, but doesn’t show a mom in the book so if you’re looking for something with both parents or just mom, this isn’t it.
