LIBRARY JOURNAL (STARRED) -- A Chinese American man named Owen Johnson's quest to solve the mystery behind his birth parent's disappearance leads him to the peak of a windswept mountain in China, where he discovers an ancient Shaolin temple inhabited by a group of warriors calling themselves the Order of the Flaming Fist. After proving his martial arts prowess, the order's leader, Master Wei Lun, invites Owen to stay and begin training. Soon, Owen begins a forbidden romance with another warrior, Ling Zan, and learns that the order has two missions: to rediscover the long-lost ability to generate devastating fireballs and to ensure their temple's secrets never fall into the hands of their adversaries, the Scorched Earth Clan.
VERDICT Kirkman (
Oblivion Song. Vol. 3) and Samnee (Black Widow: The Complete Collection) have created a fun homage to classic martial arts films and comic books, and while this volume serves as a prelude to an upcoming monthly series, it includes more than enough action and intrigue to satisfy on its own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good

T.J. · 22 July 2020

Another hit for Robert Kirkman and Skybound. You can see the outline of a TV show in the story, settings and characters, but this doesn't detract from what is a wonderful introduction to a new series.Releasing the "origin" arc in one fell swoop continues from the die! Die! Die! Single issue cold release...and it works, as often the introductory story pieces can seem slow when you just want to get into the filling of the pie.The story works very well, has good, well drawn (if a little clichéd) characters and enough intrigue is created in the final third to warrant me chasing down the subsequent releases as and when they drop through comoxology as single issues.Chris Samnee and the entire art team are on song for this, Chris draws beautiful comic books and you get the feeling he's having fun here, freed from the shackles of mark waids insistent politics in his most recent marvel works. If you're a kirkman fan, or even just a fan of good, solid, fun action adventure stories, give this a whirl. Even more so if you're mad into martial arts films (especially the classic karate kid)!

5.0 out of 5 stars FIRE POWER !!!

Firepower Vol. 1 Prelude collects the prelude that takes place before issue #1 that physically was a free comic book Day release in local comic shops. Firepower was written by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) with artwork from Chris Samnee (Daredevil), Matt Wilson (Wonder Woman) doing the colours and Rus Wooton as the letterer. I'd been into comics for a few years but only a few months ago I figured I check out my local comic shop, I had no idea what to get since it was my first time and this was one he recommended, needless to say I liked it and luckily I saw there was a lengthy prelude at a very fair price so I thought why not?The back cover covers this quite well and I won't add anything beyond and just give my opinion on the comic. The back cover says "Owen Johnson's journey to China to learn about his birth parents eventually leads him to a mysterious Shaolin temple. The students there study to rediscover the Fire Power, the lost art of throwing fireballs. A power they claim will be needed soon to save the world. Will Owen Johnson be the first person in a thousand years to wield the Fire Power?"First things first, I loved the story, it felt more practical and down to earth with fun characters throughout. I did have a few thoughts on the story though, the beginning felt so similar to Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins, where our main character is on a snowy mountain and arrives at his destination and immediately has to fight despite being tired and not eaten for days. When characters are fighting attackers are being named and felt a lot like an Iron First comic but was tolerable. There are several clichés throughout the comic for instance the "he learned it from me" or the new guy in a group is disliked by one guy and holds a grudge, the new guy learning things on their first try despite others dedicating their lives to it. Despite these minor issues I did thoroughly enjoy the story and characters, particularly Wei Lin, he was fun and modern and broke down the stereotypical role of the wise master should I say. I also was a fan of the budding romance between Owen and Zan but sadly from reading the free comic book day Firepower #1 there romance doesn't solidify (or at least I don't think it does) which is a shame. The comic is a quick read and on top of being a quick read makes this one I would easily come back to. Being a fan of the FCBD #1 as well as the prelude means that I'll be keeping a look out for a cheap volume 1 to give a read. I would highly recommend this to anyone regardless of their interest in martial arts as it's simply a fun and enjoyable comic. Would this be a series as successful as the walking dead? Probably not but I hope this is the start of something wonderful.Hopefully you found this review helpful and happy reading.

Chris Samnee can do no wrong in storytelling.I wasn't sure if I wanted to get this, but glad I did. I won't spoil anything. But it was such great read. Like really good. There was also that feel of it being told like a modern day classic Kung Fu Movie.

Excellent "prelude"!

Not what I expected

Y.H. · 5 June 2025

I was expecting this story to be completely derivative of a certain anime that we are all familiar with that has to do with different nations 1 of them being fire nation. :). And while initially it did kind of go along those lines there was a left turn taken in the story telling that I did not see coming and I was pleasantly surprised. Where that left turn took me was fun and also made me wish that I didn't have wait for my book club to get up with me so that I could move on to the next book LOL.The characters were fleshed out enough To get you through this Initial world building issue, But there is still plenty of characters who need to be fleshed out and there is lots of room for Already covered characters to grow even more.In this 1st issue questions were answered and more questions were revealed. It's a fun beginning to what might be a heavy story. I highly recommend giving this story a try.

Buon inizio. Kirkman è una garanzia.

R. · 24 May 2022

Consigliato.
