5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable Metacognitive Resources
This book is perfect for my purpose and role and could not come at a more perfect time. As metacognition lead in my school, I am tasked with putting together resources and delivering CPD - an absolute joy due to my knowledge and passion of metacognition within my MA. However, this book provides a lot of useful resources that come with a wealth of experiences across all subjects (something I was struggling to provide in creating resources and sharing due to teaching solely English!) I love that it provides a clear and precise theory which is useful in being a good length for those who may be new to, or are still trying to understand, metacognition. Not too long to overwhelm but not short enough to brush it off quickly either. The use of ‘what, how, why’ is extremely useful for practical resources too, as it can also be used as part of modelling - metacogception, you might say! I will absolutely be recommending this book to all of my colleagues when I complete my next session! Thank you so much for providing this excellent wealth of knowledge and for helping so many professionals in getting metacognition done right!
5.0 out of 5 stars Full of practical ideas
A superb book for thinking about what metacognition looks like in the classroom, this book explains the theory behind metacognition and non-examples before offering strategies that you can try in the classroom tomorrow. As a contributor I have natural bias but I have learnt so much from the chapters in the book and other practical examples offered. My practice has certainly changed for the better after reading this book!
5.0 out of 5 stars So easy to read and great ideas ready to go!
This is such a great resource for understanding metacognition and with so many great ideas and strategies ready to use in the classroom. The book itself is easy to read, with many helpful and detailed examples on how to implement these ideas in a class.I would highly recommend to anyone! Great value for money!
1.0 out of 5 stars Waffle upon waffle
Like many current educational books, this is c180 pages that says a lot but without really saying anything.New lingo used to describe established ideas.Over-complication of some simple concepts. It’s just a reworking of a lot of readily available material. Nothing revolutionary at all.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great book!!
I really like how this book opened with a section on what metacognition actually is!! Then the rest of the chapters were filled with useful information and strategies that classroom teachers and leaders can then apply to their daily practice. I’ve used this book to help me plan CPD sessions for my own department!! It was however a bit repetitive at times and if this was removed the book would have been a bit shorter (we all know how precious teacher time is!!). Overall, a great CPD companion.
5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for all teachers
Teaching metacognitive thinking is a challenging thing to do and Nathan’s book is excellent for supporting teachers who want to teach their students how to think more deeply about their learning. Considering metacognitive thinking through modelling, questioning and more, including what it looks like in online learning, Nathan considers the importance of teaching metacognitive practices explicitly, sharing case studies so that the reader can see what this might look like in the classroom. Highly recommended for all teachers, this book has been a huge help for how we model thinking ourselves to our learners throughout a learning cycle.
