A gorgeously illustrated celebration of nature and making space for wildlife in our gardens. ― The Bookseller Buyer's Guide

Illustrated with teeming decorative images, this is the story of a precious wild corner damaged by a badger. How to defend nature against nature? Betty’s grandma finds the answer. -- Nicolette Jones ―
The Sunday Times

A wonderful celebration of the natural world and the bond between Betty and her grandma. Emily Sutton really makes that world come alive in her lavish illustrations, every one of which is so rich in detail that each time you read the book, you will discover something new. ―
Books for Keeps

The gentle story delivers a sense of challenge to the very young from the cosy security of home and the natural world of the garden… The positive message of the story mirrors the excitement children feel when they have overcome a challenge. Emily Sutton’s whimsical illustrations are full of the detail that captures a child’s eyes such as the insects in the garden, plant pots in the market and a cat strolling across the lawn. ―
Yorkshire Life

This delightful book with illustrations by Emily Sutton is a love letter to nature. […] Young readers will be excited to join Betty on her quest in this book with an important message about protecting our natural world. ―

4.0 out of 5 stars Spoiler-free: A fun story with such beautiful illustrations, but ended in a way I didn't expect

This is a fun and beautifully illustrated book. Betty loves spending time with her grandma at her cottage and she especially loves spending time in Acorn Hollows, the garden behind her grandma's house which is shared by the local community. But one day when she wakes up she finds the garden outside has been messed up, something has been digging at the grass and destroying the flowers. Betty is determined to find out who is responsible, but when she does, how will she stop them destroying more of the garden? This hardback is larger than A4 in size and is filled with thick matt pages of text and beautiful illustrations. The story is a fun one with Betty enjoying quality time at her grandma's home, both in Acorn Hollows and spending time helping her grandma sell jam at the local market made from the berries grown in the garden. But when the mysterious animal visitor comes and starts digging in the garden Betty worries that it'll destroy the berries, so she devises a plan to get rid of it. I like how this story goes in a way I wasn't expecting. The story is a mix of rhyming and not and I did enjoy the parts that rhymed especially. The book is filled with so many lovely illustrations and I do believe these make the story so much more appealing.I've come to really love Emily Sutton's illustrations style, and in fact she might just be my favourite children's book illustrator. Every page is a joy to look at with so many beautiful and colourful images and so much to see on each page. I love how Betty and her grandma look and all the details you can see in each double page. Illustrations like the one at the market or the end pages have so much to see that you can spend a long time just looking at the pictures alone, they are that enchanting. The story has a good and satisfying ending, although I did expect the story to finish in a different way than it did. I don't want to spoil it by giving away the ending, but I will say that I thought Betty would befriend the visitor rather than do what she did to stop it digging up the garden. It did make it feel like the story could have had a slightly better ending, although it's just a minor thing and doesn't take away from the fun of the tale, which if it rhymed all the way through would have felt even better to me as a part rhyming and part not book is something I'm not really used to.-Thanks to Walker Books for a free copy.
