Electronics Cookbook: Practical Electronic Recipes with Arduino and Raspberry Pi

Description:

If you're among the many hobbyists and designers who came to electronics through Arduino and Raspberry Pi, this cookbook will help you learn and apply the basics of electrical engineering without the need for an EE degree. Through a series of practical recipes, you'll learn how to solve specific problems while diving into as much or as little theory as you're comfortable with.

Author Simon Monk (Raspberry Pi Cookbook) breaks down this complex subject into several topics, from using the right transistor to building and testing projects and prototypes. With this book, you can quickly search electronics topics and go straight to the recipe you need. It also serves as an ideal reference for experienced electronics makers.

This cookbook includes:

  • Theoretical concepts such as Ohm's law and the relationship between power, voltage, and current
  • The fundamental use of resistors, capacitors and inductors, diodes, transistors and integrated circuits, and switches and relays
  • Recipes on power, sensors and motors, integrated circuits, and radio frequency for designing electronic circuits and devices
  • Advice on using Arduino and Raspberry Pi in electronics projects
  • How to build and use tools, including multimeters, oscilloscopes, simulations software, and unsoldered prototypes

About the Author

Simon Monk is a full-time author and maker, mostly writing about electronics for makers. Some of his better-known books include Programming Arduino: Getting Started with Sketches, Raspberry Pi Cookbook, and Hacking Electronics. He is also the co-author of Practical Electronics for Inventors and wrote Minecraft Mastery with his son, Matthew Monk.

5.0 out of 5 stars So glad I got this it's fascinating

S.R. · 21 May 2017

Only got it yesterday but I am already well into it - if you need something to tell you what you item should be using to perform a certain task, or to give you ideas for your current or next project this appears to be it - there is an emphasis on Arduino and Raspberry Pi - which suits me - but it's not just for these boards. If you are a beginner or not too far up the electronics ladder you will appreciate it - sorry I can't speak for the experienced hobbyist not being one myself :-) but it does seem to be a good reference. It is set out like "I have a problem, Here is the solution, Here is a discussion of the solution" (I have never had a cookbook book but I assume this is the style they use for Reilly.) It is well illustrated, lots of ccircuit examples and there are code sections for Arduino and Pi. There is a lot of advice - and it doesn't shy away fro things like mains AC, though with many dire (but sensible) warnings. It is very US-centric so us poor souls in the rest of the world will have to convert some of their weird systems... but Monk does use the metric system rather than US/imperial. It is a new book - (April 2017) and there are a some "bugs" like diagrams referenced incorrectly but on the who;e everything seems fine. (Reily do have an errata site foir the book - must vist it :-)

Great book to keep refering to when building electrical projects. Great information and examples. A must have book if you are into Arduino or pi.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book for electronic enthusiasts

P. · 18 September 2017

A good book for electronic enthusiasts. It explains the subject in an easy to understand way. Would recommend this to anyone wishing to learn electronics

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars

A.f. · 4 September 2017

Very good book for beginers and intermediate. Everything what you need in one place.Ready solutions for most problems

3.0 out of 5 stars Irritating style

K. · 15 April 2018

The "cookbook" style is very irritating and just an excuse to pas out the material! The contents are OK, just rather unispiring compared to Make: Electronics. You can do better!

Perfeito para Makers

P. · 26 January 2018

Livro dividido em "receitas", pode ser lido tanto na sequência para quem quer sair da teoria e ver exemplos práticos de usos de componentes em arranjos diversos, ou como enciclopédia, para uma consulta a algum tipo de circuito ou arranjo específico. Recomendo.

Monk Delivers a Hit

K.S. · 16 December 2017

I have a lot of Monk's books - he is an authority on electronics and is committed to writing for makers now - but often I find his work either hit or miss. I was quite surprised at the quality of this book - it's a hit. :)Monk offers an extremely well written, well laid out, progressive set of basic-intermediate-occasionally advanced recipes for solving a myriad of problems that makers, hobbyists and designers are guaranteed to come across at one time or another. It is organized to flow into more complex issues; it starts with components and evolves into Arduino and Pi coding. The format is formulaic; a problem, a solution, an example, and a quick discussion. Some of the tidbits in this book are pure gold (for example Joule Thief, switching higher voltage loads with transistors) and some are workhorses (AC to DC converson, LIPO charging, using Op-Amps). Some are just eye-openers (Sending Data over Radio, Exceeding Available GPIO pins). It is an appropriately thick book with a surprising amount of useful content! You'll often get a photo, a schematic, a part reference, a table, example code (Arduino/Pi) and other misc. There is no recipe in here that you won't be able to pick-up and use straight out of the book. It's important to note that this book doesn't give much in the way of theory, math, or extensive detail. That wasn't his goal, he is upfront about it, and after using this book many times, I realized it would wreck the flow. Monk provides enough info to get the task done, and if you want more, you know enough to start digging. I highly recommend pairing this with his authoritative tome: Practical Electronics for Inventors, Fourth Edition.

Fantastic melding of basic electronics and Arduino/Raspberry pi ecosystems

M. · 26 September 2018

Excellent intro to electronics book. The lessons expertly meld electronics circuits basics with the Arduino and Raspberry pi. I also highly recommend Simon Monk's other Getting starting with sketches books to learn the programming side of Arduino.

Ein tolles Buch

M.H. · 18 May 2017
