Building an Electric Vehicle: (Black and White Edition)

Description:

If you have the desire to build your own electric vehicle, "Building An Electric Vehicle" with clear instructions and more than 130 pictures in its 180 pages is the book for you. This book provides a step-by-step approach to converting an internal combustion engine automobile into an electric vehicle. You are taken through the design and construction of two electric vehicles, showing you pictures of every step. The illustrated principles will help you produce the most efficient vehicle possible. This book follows the design and construction of two electric vehicles from the funding stage to the final driving stage. Unlike most "How-To-Books" this book discusses what not to do, in addition to what to do. You can see how some decisions led to some not so desirable results. Included in this manual is useful information on how to acquire the needed funding to do the conversion as well as a complete cost breakdown for each vehicle. A cost spreadsheet was used for each vehicle construction to record every cost. A minimal cost estimate to produce your electric vehicle is also shown. Vehicle schematics are included, showing how to integrate the drive electronics to the original vehicle wiring. The large pictures in "Building An Electric Vehicle" gives you all the information you need to build your own clean-energy, electric vehicle. These full size pictures make the book cost more, but add so much more to the level of information included.

About the Author

Ken has a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, but he believes anyone who can turn a wrench and has a basic understanding of how automobiles work can convert an automobile with an internal combustion engine into an electric vehicle. Ken is retired from the military electronics industry and is an adjunct instructor at a local college, helping students learn about electric vehicles.

3.0 out of 5 stars Acceptable for just over a fiver but a rather amateurish book.

L.P. · 5 August 2014

This book is too full of random thoughts and ideas to be truly useful but at least the writer attempts to share his experiences with the reader and, at just over a fiver, the book is worth a 'read'. For instance, I don't want to hear about the author's experiences with Corvettes but there's till some useful information about electric car conversions in there. Many of the photographs tend towards the sort of pix that would go into a personal album rather than being truly informative but some of them provide a useful insight into the work carried out. This would have made a better blog than a book but there you go - this professional technical writing lark is easy innit - anyone can do it!

If you want to build an electric car, this is the wrong book. It has no calculations, no explanations, no background reasons given, no comparisons. All you get is around 100 pictures of authors own cars with large arrows indicating the names of various parts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good background read.

13 year old overview of 2 conversions. I found it useful. Pics aren't great. Really fast delivery!

Bello!

a broad overview of EV conversions

V.R. · 30 July 2017

The book keeps everything easily digestible, so its very easy to read and understand...but there aren't many details. For example, a very important question you may have is "how many batteries will i need to go X miles in my car?" This question goes unanswered in this book. The chapter on batteries is literally 2.3 pages and only talks about 2 types of batteries and compares their cost, weight and maintenance. Hell, the chapter on body paint and body is longer! Why is a chapter on paint and body even included??? that stuff is no different on an EV than any other car! There are no formulas to help you figure out how many batteries you will need, or the voltage you want to achieve for your goals. One of the most basic components on an EV is treated like an afterthought. Other chapters provide more info, like the chapter on choosing a motor, since it lays out the most common electric motor for EV conversions. In the end, if you have no clue on what goes into the planning of an EV conversion, this book will be a good read. Its like "EV conversions for dummies." As my first EV conversion book, I really enjoyed it, and learned a lot from it. However, going back thru it again to help with my actual conversion, the book us fairly useless.

The book is a little old.... ...

The book is a little old ....need specific guide lines of step by step build of one car instead of two... needs up dating but in the end it showed me that a electric motor with an manual is possible

EV conversion for average people

While I would have liked to have a book on converting VW vans, I purchased this book for its step by step treatment of the EV conversion process. Ken Watkins takes one step by step in the conversion of a few of the more likely American models that can be converted. He discusses the reason for his choice of the vehicles and while he acknowledges that one can use a kit that includes the conversion adapter plate, he explains in detail how one might make said plate yourself. That alone was worth the cost of the book.
