How money works
What makes cash, banknotes and anything else count as money? And why do we all trust it?

The story of money
Money has existed long before the first coins were made, and over the centuries it has taken on many unusual forms. How did it all come about?

In the bank
Almost every adult has a bank account - but why? What do banks actually do? Are there any alternatives? And was it really the banks' fault that the world suffered a financial meltdown in 2008?

Earning and borrowing
Don't have any money? No problem! Almost anyone can get hold of
some money, by working for it, or borrowing from someone who has it.

Spending, growing and giving
Some people spend everything they have very quickly. Others prefer to save up. If you have some money to spare, you should give it away to charity - shouldn't you?

Governments and money
Taxes, deficits, inflation, deflation, quantitative easing - what does it all mean, and who's in charge?

Big questions
How to be a billionaire, how to buy happiness, how to make the world a fairer place - and other important questions that nobody knows the answers to -
yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series of books whatever your age

RECOMMENDED - we LOVE this Usborne series. Bought for my 10yr old son, we've all found the concise explanations in this and in the Politics edition really informative. We've read them through and use them as references. Great for replying any questions arising from news and current affairs and to encourage saving and an understanding if financial value.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic summary for kids of all things financial

My daughter asked for this for Christmas. We love Usborne books & she enjoyed the one on politics so wanted this. It's excellent (as are all Usborne books) & she has learnt lots about finance. It has generated lots of discussions & will be useful for reference in years to come. Perfectly pitched for 8+ years (my daughter is 11).

5.0 out of 5 stars For the young capitalist

Great book, that is very attractively presented.I’m quite good and comfortable with money. I know a lot about it given my work and education. And I enjoyed investing in equity, not always succesfull , since I was in early high school. I’m not obsessed with money or luxury but life can be more pleasant and more of a gift if you don’t have to worry too much about it.So maybe more so than eduction and upbringing I would like to instill some of my financial insights and skills on my children to hopefully help them later in life. The problem is to draw and keep their attention to such boring matters when attractive video games and streaming content is available to spend time on. And frankly there is very little educational material about money and investing for young children. Luckily both our children are avid readers and fairly good with maths. I handed this book to our oldest, a keen reader so there was a good chance she would pick it up. Otherwise I planned to use it for guided reading sessions which would be even better as that generally leads to better comprehension and a little debate on the topic. But she appreciated the gift very much and has actually started to read sections of it and asked a few questions. Can’t ask for much more. Excellent book.
