Stress-Free Navigation: Electronic and Traditional

Description:

You might think stress-free navigation sounds like an impossible paradox.
But it need not be. All boaters, whether under sail or under power, need to be able to navigate safely on the water – both to keep themselves and their crew out of trouble and to avoid endangering others. Yet navigation has often been presented almost as a black art – complicated, full of tricky maths, and with alien concepts to get your head around.
Step in ‘Mr Stress-Free’: having in his previous books presented techniques for sailing and motorboating in an accessible, manageable fashion, Duncan Wells now turns his attention to navigation. He makes concepts easy to understand and the practice of navigation perfectly achievable for all – with minimum stress.
The book covers the basic introductory elements clearly and simply for novices, and progresses through more advanced techniques for experienced navigators, so that there is something for everyone, whatever their skill level. Diagrams, quick-reference tables and flowcharts, explanatory step-by-step photographs, box features, top tips and QR codes – giving access to explanatory videos – are all features that have been much appreciated by readers of Duncan’s other top-selling titles.

Both Duncan Wells's "Stress-Free.." books are a must for anyone with or without sailing/navigation experience who wants to learn more about sailing. They are relevant to any crewing arrangements - single-handed or several hands. While they cover everything one might encounter in the RYA dayskipper & yachtmaster courses they are not bound by the RYA syllabuses but are wide-ranging and for anyone with an interest in improving their skills & understanding. The way Duncan Wells has dealt with modern and traditional nav techniques is really helpful. They are extremely clearly written in a no nonsense commonsense way and any arcane terms or concepts are simply explained. Everything is clearly worked through with good illustrations, photos and diagrams and lots of detailed explanations and examples. One yachtmaster book I bought dealt with secondary port calculations by just saying he did it by interpolation and that was his contribution to that topic!, it was an expensive book. In comparison Wells's detailed explanations really put the work in and made secondary ports readily understandable. If I had discovered Wells's books first I wouldn't have bothered with the expensive and none-too detailed text which I regret buying.Great books with masses of well-organised practical info which give you confidence and answer lots of those questions left lingering when having read other books on the same subjects.I am nothing to do with the author or his school. I would recommend these books anytime and ones that you need to keep with you on the water.

Really dislike how the order of things run in this book, it doesnt feel natural certainly not advantageous to the new navigator. It is not a complete waste of money but I am looking for another book that may teach in a structured way and also have less pages where there just seems to be sections of irrelevance, repeats or pretty useless filler material. Not a good read.

Where his book Stress Free Sailing was possibly the clearest and most practical book on sailing to hit the chart table, Stress Free Navigation forgets the title instruction and becomes stranded in a sea of traditional navigation theory. We’ve all read those books before, attended the courses, maybe even passed the exams which would empower us to handle a supertanker. But what most sailors need is a how-to volume on integrating modern electronics into traditional chart and divider’s passage making. Alas, that book is yet to be written.

Excellent

Another great teaching book

Mr. Wells comes through again with his unique blend of teachable moments, technique, emphasis on safety, and his pleasant and appreciated modesty. The embedded videos work flawlessly on the Kindle version, read on the iPad. Emphasis on sailing in UK, lessons are still applicable for US waters and IALA (B) aids to navigation designations.
