5.0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful book!
I struggled to get on with this book last year - but on recommendation I tried again and was amazed by the quality of the story. Getting to know the sisters was a joy and the surrounding characters were fascinating and totally believable. It was a superb story and I enjoyed every word enormously - thank you so much Millie!
5.0 out of 5 stars good read, eventually
It took a bit to get started but once it did I enjoyed it very much. It wasn’t the typical feel good book
4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but not Milly's best
I am a huge fan of Milly Johnson. I've read all of her previous books and enjoyed them massively. Whilst I thought this book was well written and the story was good, I also felt that it didn't feel like a book written by Milly Johnson. A lot of her humour seemed to be missing and it almost felt as if Milly was trying out a new writing style. There were a couple of moments that made me smile, but, it just didn't feel the same as reading a lot of Milly's other books. So, basically, I thought this was a good story, but, it could have been written by anyone. I missed Milly's warm humour a lot in this book.
5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite Milly Johnson book so far
It's clear when we first meet the Vamplew sisters that a lot has happened in their lives and that they didn't have the easiest of childhoods living with their parents, Eleanor and Julian, in their family home Fox House. The sisters, Jolene, Marsha and Annis, are reunited for the first time in a very long time after the death of their mother including Annis who didn't turn up for the funeral of her father.Despite being sisters they have never really had a close relationship and in fact at one time they all felt like they were only children due to the seven year age gap between each of them. Will spending this time together enable them to be able to mend bridges and rebuild a relationship that they all seem to be craving?Of the three sisters Jolene is the one who appears to have it all, a successful career as a romance novelist and a loving marriage but appearances can be very deceptive as in reality she's unable to follow her own advice that she gives the characters in her books with regards to her relationship with her husband. The more I discovered, the more I was willing her on to stand up for herself and take back everything that was hers.Meanwhile Marsha appears to have chosen a successful career over love as she's put everything into building up a successful business that she's now had an offer to sell. But without the business, who really is she as she's shut herself off to love following having her heart broken when she was younger. Will spending time at home help her come to terms with her past and help her look forward to a brighter future? As for Annis, she was the sister with an air of mystery around her regarding why she ran away as a teenager and has never reconnected with her family until now. The more we learn as to what she has been through the more I wanted to know what led her down this path. She has endured so much that has made her stronger and self-reliant, will spending time with her sisters enable her to finally lay the ghosts to rest and give her the sense of belonging she deserves?Add into the mix neighbour Sally who on the outside appears to be a busybody but scratch below the surface and you'll discover that she has deeply affected by events involving the Vamplews. Sally is also the holder of a secret that she wished she didn't know thanks to a letter from Eleanor that she was asked to give one of the sisters which she wished she had never read. It's only over time that we the reader get an insight to each of the relationships within the family and finally uncover the shocking truth that is revealed in the letter.Although Together, Again does include some of Milly Johnson's trademark humour between the pages it's definitely a grittier read than her other books which I personally enjoyed. I loved getting to know each of the sisters and would love a follow up at some point even if it's just a novella so that we can get to see how the changes they have made have impacted their lives.
5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book
Three sisters with varying ages are drawn together when a family member passes away. The girls’ parents lived in a large enviable house which was for some of their lives, their own home. The youngest daughter leaves home at 16 and never contacts her parents or her sisters but has let them know that she’s alive and well and wishes to remain absent from their home.We find ourselves in the house again & the adult sisters having to arrange a funeral& sort the old house out.The two older sisters don’t really know much about the youngest sibling because they were much older and had lives of their own.A wonderful relationship is formed again as they sort out the arrangements and explore the contents of the house. This book has so much sadness and regret, however the past cannot be altered. The neighbour has so much to deal with in her personal life but wishes to be friends with the girls for her own reasons. So much is revealed about the parents throughout the book because certain chapters are written by Eleanor the mother, which explains the reasoning for many events.Milly’s humour is present however this book has quite a serious vibe for much of it. I thoroughly enjoyed reading how the girls came together to support one another. Many wonderful characters appear throughout and there are some rotters too, for good measure.
5.0 out of 5 stars Such a good story
I love Milly Johnson’s books but hadn’t seen this one - published in 2022 - until a couple of days ago.I read it in one sitting. I was gripped by the story of three sisters, a 7 year age gap between oldest and middle and middle and youngest, who spend time together after the death of their emotionally lacking mother. This is different from Milly’s other books in that it is more weighty in tone, still having that wit and humour of her other novels but with a much more serious style. There was a mention of the Daily Trumpet and the writing was as beautiful as ever, my vocabulary isn’t good enough to explain how wonderfully written the story is - I’m sorry. Milly’s emotional intelligence is staggering and so much of what she conveyed resonated with me.Set aside a day or so to read this, as I don’t think you will want to put it down until it’s finished.
4.0 out of 5 stars Milly at her best
I love it when Millie Johnson is not trying to be funny because I think her more serious writing is far better. Although the book is described as having the laughter joy and hope, I’ll dispute the laughter part. The three protagonists are extremely well written, and especially Annis who I really warmed to.What puzzles me though is why, at Fox House (a house which is described as being substantially bigger than one of the sister’s 5 bedroomed ‘mighty construction’ ) it would be necessary to pack all the summer clothes up and place in the attic during winter and vice versa. Very unnecessary!Great book though.
Quite different for Milly
As with all of Milly’s books, Together Again delivers the goods. For me, it felt much darker than the previous books. I would have liked to have deeper explored the story behind Eleanor and her husband a bit. It felt like we didn’t really get enough information about the dynamic between them. Besides that, I really enjoyed this book. I did miss all the bloopers from the local paper that are such an enjoyable addition to previous books. Besides my few little gripes I still give Together Again five stars because that’s what Milly always gives us. A five star read.
Outstanding
Just when you think one of your favourite authors couldn’t get any better she goes and write a magnificent story. Breathtaking. Outstanding.
ANOTHER GREAT BOOK FROM MILLY JOHNSON
SHE ALWAYS WRITES SO WELL - SO MANY LITTLE EXTRAS TO THE STORY, AND ALWAYS A SATISFACTORY ENDING. JUST LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT BOOK NOW! LTH.
A bit dark and depressing, but it definitely has a lot of heart and emotion
Maybe it was the mood I was in when reading it, but I didn’t like this book as much as I usually like Molly’s books. I found it to be unrelentingly sad and depressing, a bit more comic relief would have been a blessing. Still, great characters, story and dialogue as usual.
still a fan
This was a good read! I’m missing the humor and joy in the other books, that made me look forward to seeing the newest book! I felt let down after reading this book even after a satisfying finish! I’ve read this author’s books several times over but I’ll pass on this one
