Encyclopedia of Electronic Components V1: Resistors, Capacitors, Inductors, Semiconductors, Electromagnetism

Description:

Want to know how to use an electronic component? This first book of a three-volume set includes key information on electronics parts for your projects—complete with photographs, schematics, and diagrams. You’ll learn what each one does, how it works, why it’s useful, and what variants exist. No matter how much you know about electronics, you’ll find fascinating details you’ve never come across before.

Convenient, concise, well-organized, and precise

Perfect for teachers, hobbyists, engineers, and students of all ages, this reference puts reliable, fact-checked information right at your fingertips—whether you’re refreshing your memory or exploring a component for the first time. Beginners will quickly grasp important concepts, and more experienced users will find the specific details their projects require.

  • Unique: the first and only encyclopedia set on electronic components, distilled into three separate volumes
  • Incredibly detailed: includes information distilled from hundreds of sources
  • Easy to browse: parts are clearly organized by component type
  • Authoritative: fact-checked by expert advisors to ensure that the information is both current and accurate
  • Reliable: a more consistent source of information than online sources, product datasheets, and manufacturer’s tutorials
  • Instructive: each component description provides details about substitutions, common problems, and workarounds
  • Comprehensive: Volume 1 covers power, electromagnetism, and discrete semi-conductors; Volume 2 includes integrated circuits, and light and sound sources; Volume 3 covers a range of sensing devices.

About the Author

Charles Platt became interested in computers when he acquired an Ohio Scientific C4P in 1979. After writing and selling software by mail order, he taught classes in BASIC programming, MS-DOS, and subsequently Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. He wrote five computer books during the 1980s. He has also written science fiction novels such as The Silicon Man (published originally by Wired books) and Protektor (from Avon Books). He stopped writing science fiction when he started contributing to Wired magazine in 1993, and became one of its three senior writers a couple of years later. Charles began contributing to Make magazine in its third issue and is currently a contributing editor. Make: Electronics is his first book for Make Books. Currently he is designing and building prototypes of medical equipment in his workshop in a northern Arizona wilderness area.

A great read ideal for reference Very infomative

5.0 out of 5 stars good reference book

B. · 18 March 2025

Excellent compendium of parts

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not entirely what I was looking for.

G.C. · 8 June 2015

Fairly good read. Explains about components on how they function and fail rather then fixing your broken vintage hi fi or radio. In fact if your looking to repair broken electrical's, this book covers mainly modern components so isn't much use for older equipment. It's still a good informative read but in my opinion, limited to more modern electrics, obviously, will be great in 15 - 20 years when electronics have advanced further again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read.

R.S. · 14 January 2025

I like how the author categorized and compartmentalized all the components if they were sufficiently similar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great books - a must have for the electronics enthusiast

L.B. · 19 March 2021

The author said that he wrote these because nothing equivalent already existed and I think he is correct. In these modern times of "everything on the internet", these books are still very useful for quick and clear reference. Each volume covers a subset of common electronic components and goes into a reasonable level of detail about what they are and how they work - certainly enough depth for a teenager or keen youngster but also enough for many older hobbyists to quickly remind themselves what the bias voltage of a particular transistor is or to work out how much gate voltage will ensure a MOSFET is fully conducting etc.The print is very clear and easy to read so great to keep a set on your shelves.

This book does exactly what it says on the tin- it is not a theory book but a reference on components and how to use them. It is explained right from the start how this book fills gaps between information readily available from manufacturers, the internet and other theory based booksI've now looked through it and it is suitable for NC/NVQ level qualifications- it provides the required depth of knowledge without delving into complex mathematical equations. It provides some simple circuits to clarify some uses of the componets and also some of the common faults that occur either through human error or wear and tear, or incorrect use.My only gripe is it is American although references are made to European/UK voltages.I really do not know where in the book wreckdriver has misunderstood the author regarding cells and batteries. For me, it does fill a gap in available resources and I highly recommend it (if only it used 240V and mm not inches).
