L. · 5 July 2025

Should have read the reviews before purchasing. The quality is very poor especially the images, bought it out of nostalgia as I remember this story from my childhood.

4.0 out of 5 stars Childhood revisited

F.t.C. · 24 November 2024

Apparently a knocked together publication, possibly with a photocopier as the whole back half of the book is blank. But, the stories of an Indian child outsmarting tigers are present and preserved, as they should be.

2.0 out of 5 stars Historical racism

V. · 18 August 2025

I bought this book to show my sons an example of the racist literature for children in the 70's.However I returned the book because ìts very poor quality...you can see all the pixels

1.0 out of 5 stars Shockingly bad story, even worse physical product

D. · 23 May 2023

The internal pages are cheap feeling and the graphics are Black & White which is really silly because the story is about coloured clothing. The graphics are also very blurred. The front graphic showing Sambos' shoes cut off is a hint at what to expect inside. The story itself is very poor reflecting limited imagination of the writer or what passed as ok for child literature for the time when it was written.Cheap nasty product, ridiculous odd story.

1.0 out of 5 stars An unappealing children's book.

a. · 2 March 2015

This is deemed to be a more pc version of Bannerman's original, a favourite of my childhood. It retains the name of Sambo which is really the only objectionable part of the first book. The updates are minor. Sambo has blue jeans, for example, instead of little blue trousers and his dad, rather than his mum, cooks the pancakes as she is getting ready for work. They've also got smaller appetites than they used to. As a document of a stage in this book's evolution it is interesting enough but the pictures are horrid muddy monochrome photocopies so I don't think children would find it at all attractive.
