London's Industrial Past

Description:

London’s Industrial Past gives the reader an opportunity to read about a selection of factories that were once scattered across the city. While older generations may look back at the names that have gone with great affection, for the younger reader it may come as a surprise that so many ‘things’ were once manufactured in Britain’s capital city. The sheer wealth and breadth of products that were made is staggering, from the mundanity of biscuits to the hightech of aircraft production. This volume sheds light on those lost names, many of which are still with us, but no longer made in London, or indeed in the UK. Areas of manufacture covered include brewing, toys, aircraft, cars, sweets, biscuits, electrical goods and art and photographic supplies. Brands mentioned include Truman’s, Lesney, Handley Page, Bentley, Trebor, Peek Freans, Lyons, Hoover, Kodak and Beechams. Packed with archive images and illustrations, this volume will be a great addition to the library of anybody with an interest in London’s history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well illustrated reminiscences

The book is about A5 size with 96 pages. It covers many factories and manufacturing site sin London that are no longer in existence.Typically it will have a colour photo of the site as it is today, a black and white one of it in the pas, a black and white one of the workforce, and perhaps an illustration or advert of a product the company made. Many company sites are covered, from McVities in Harlesden to Schweppes in Hendon to De Havilland in Kingsbury. The text for each company is about 150 - 200 words, with a brief description of what the company made, the architecture of the site, and the company's history and the history of the site, plus what it is used for today. It is a great book for a trip down memory lane for anyone who grew up in London's 20th century. Those who would drive into central London from the suburbs, and go past a familiar landmark of a factory of a household name, or would get a full time or temporary job with a local manufacturer. When entire suburbs had hundreds of people who all worked at the same factory.Which often is not longer still operating. It would make a nice gift or could be used as a coffee table book, or for research by those interested in London's suburbs. It is not though a book that looks in depth into industrial processes, chemistry, economics etc.

Not expansive but hugely interesting content

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant enough but little content

The book is quite interesting, but there is not a great deal of content. In other words it is a small book. What is there is good, but I hesitate to recommend it unreservedly.
