Railway Accidents and Incidents in South-East England

Description:

This unique volume is a startling record of memorable and tragic happenings culled from the railway history of three counties in south-east England: Sussex, Surrey and Kent. It is believed to be the first book to describe and illustrate the accidents and unfortunate incidents on a chronological and county-wide basis. The time span is comprehensive, with accounts of the first mishaps dating from Victorian times and the most recent from the twenty-first century. Accounts of wartime incidents have been included. These extraordinary moments in railway history are explored by the author in vivid detail. The focus is not solely on collisions and derailments but extends also to other untoward events, some away from the main line and others on railway premises. The descriptions of the varied and dramatic scenes depicted include details of those caught up in the accidents and interesting particulars relating to the subsequent fate of the locomotives involved.

About the Author

In 1985, Douglas d’Enno’s ‘The Saltdean Story’ – now difficult to obtain – was published and since then he has written 15 books, mainly of local or regional interest, including a parish history, two books on true crime in Brighton, and several ‘Through Time’ books on the Sussex area for Amberley. He has passed on to his readers his detailed knowledge of the county in all its attractive variety. He now contributes to a number of community magazines and continues to be active in the writing of books as well as translating from a number of European languages on a freelance basis despite having officially retired.

Despite what could be seen as rather uninviting content, this is a necessary and indispensable summary of the accidents – both great and small – plus other mishaps, that have occurred on the railways of Sussex, Surrey and Kent over the years. It fills a gap in the scores of railway books published about these counties. The author has trawled through all manners or documents, newspapers and websites to come up with the most comprehensive list to date of these incidents, not all of which are actual derailments and crashes. Some relate to wartime bombings, buildings collapsing, landslides and even murders; the Merstham Tunnel mystery being the most bizarre of them all. It's a startling record that will appeal to both railway enthusiasts and the general reader, and there is a wider social history to many of the various accounts. Some causes for the incidents are eyebrow-raising – a simple washer that found its way into the signal box mechanism at Barnham, caused points to be set wrongly, derailing a Brighton to Portsmouth train in 1962, resulting in 37 passengers and the driver being injured – none very seriously fortunately. It was concluded the washer could have been in the mechanism for years!Incidents as far back as 1841 are detailed – so not long after the railways reached SE England – with some very up to date ones included – 2018 the most recent. The illustrations, many photographs, but some are old prints, postcards and newspaper cuttings, are uniformly excellent throughout. All in all, an outstanding survey, superbly researched and written, and sure to become the standard reference for railway incidents over future years.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating regional history
