Railway Stations (Britain's Heritage)

Description:

Railway stations were a prominent feature of most towns and villages in Britain until post-war modernisation and closures swept many away. The largest and most imposing stations were in large towns and cities. Among the most impressive were the London termini such as King’s Cross, Liverpool Street, Paddington and Waterloo. They handled and (still handle) millions of long distance and commuter travellers every year. Elsewhere, larger cities like Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow often had more than one important station. Behind their imposing façades, they provided all manner of facilities for passengers – waiting rooms, bookstalls, refreshment rooms, luggage and lavatories. Meanwhile, country stations, especially those on branch lines, were an important part of rural life, providing a vital link for goods and passengers to and from the countryside. As the start and end point of millions of daily commutes, business trips, days out and family holidays, railway stations are undoubtedly among Britain’s most special buildings. This book is part of the Britain’s Heritage series, which provides definitive introductions to the riches of Britain’s past, and is the perfect way to get acquainted with the railway station in all its variety.

Whilst Tim Bryan’s look at Britain’s railway stations is a good and informative read, it’s also a depressing book in many ways. Informative in that you get to learn a few things but depressing because many of the elegant Victorian and Edwardian structures built to serve as an access to trains have been swept aside in an effort to ‘modernise’ the railways.Despite national protests, the fine Roman style arch and Great Hall at Euston were both demolished to make way for a modernist design described as a ‘hideous concrete box’, and that is the way British Rail, and many other corporates it has to be said, seem to be going. It’s progress, so they will claim, but it’s not always for the better.Fortunately, the brain-dead planners have yet to wield their red pen in places such as Helsby Junction, Rannoch, Stamford, Huddersfield, the Centurion Bar at Newcastle and many other wonderful buildings. But how long will they survive? If this book makes you want to visit the stations mentioned, then it’s succeeded. Though the photos are good, there are no ‘then and now’ ones but I know which I prefer.

Brought this for my son who is a big fan of Steam Trains. He was very pleased with this book as he likes investigating if some stations still exist today.

This book has some interesting bits of information about various stations and a few quite nice pictures. However, it is a lot smaller than I thought it would be and it has very small writing. But, generally it is okay 👌.
