Indian Kitchen: Secrets of Indian home cooking

Description:

Jamie Oliver: 'I love Maunika's cooking. Her food is a joy - she makes incredible Indian food really achievable at home. A fantastic Indian cookbook.'

Yotam Ottolenghi: 'Reading Maunika's book feels as though you're actually sitting in an Indian family kitchen, sharing stories and recipes. I've been inspired by her to make my own paneer and to play with pickled watermelon rind. Delightful!'

Growing up in Mumbai, Maunika Gowardhan learned the secrets of home cooking, Indian-style. Now living in the UK, Maunika is often asked, 'what do Indians cook on a day to day basis?' And, 'how is it that you can rustle up a curry for an everyday meal when you're so busy?'

The answer is in chapters of this book.
Hungry include recipes made from easy-to-find ingredients for when you're starving and short of time. And Lazy contains recipes for when you want something a bit slower, a bit comforting, but still straightforward.

Indian food is also about feasting, so when you have the luxury of time and want to put some real love into a meal at the weekend, you can turn to
Indulgent, or when you have friends and family coming over then Celebratory is the chapter for you.

Whatever your mood,
Indian Kitchen will inspire you to add Indian cooking into your weekly menu.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning collection.

I do prefer cookery books in paper format but at 99p daily deal price I couldn’t resist this little gem. It’s a stunning collection of recipes from all over India and it’s a delight to browse.I’m not familiar with the author, but I enjoy the way she presents the sections. There’s a lot of background and family history, together with information about how Indian dishes are prepared. The book is ideal for anyone who’s not familiar with Indian cuisine. There are sections on store cupboard basics, together with an explanation of each spice or veg. There’s also explanation about cooking utensils. The recipes are very easy to navigate, hyperlinks throughout make it slick and seamless to flick from one section to another. In addition to listing recipes by main ingredient, eg chicken, potatoes, egg, paneer etc. they’re also indexed under hungry, snacks, entertaining so you have a good idea as to how each dish would usually be eaten. The recipes are fabulous. Nothing too complicated and no obscure ingredients so achievable whatever your level of expertise. Filled with tips and full colour plates, it’s inspirational and a genuine delight to browse. Yummy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, fantastic Indian food that is accessible at home

I have bought many Indian cookbooks over the years and often I have found them overly complex or hard to follow. As a fairly competent cook, this has to be my favourite Indian cookbook for a number of reasons:1. Once you have a fairly well developed spice rack, not many specialist ingredients are needed and I've been able to find all of these locally;2. All of the recipes I have made have come out looking exactly like the pictures and the instructions have been clear and not overly complex;3. The recipes are DOWNRIGHT DELICIOUS! I have not come across Indian recipes that make you feel like you are eating restaurant quality food at home. I can't credit them enough. All in all, I would not change a thing in this book and found the quality of the book itself to be very good too. I imagine this will be on my shelf for many years to come with an array of diverse recipes to fit all occasions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic and easy Indian food - for any occasion

H. · 5 June 2017

I was lucky enough to attend one of Maunikas Indian cookery classes in Newcastle, and jumped at the chance to buy her first book. I can honestly say Maunika and her recipes have changed the way I eat, and Indian food and spices are now a staple in my kitchen and home. The butter chicken is to die for, and a friend of mine, whose family is from India, told me it's just as good as his Mums. The book is divided up in an interesting way, recipes according to your mood: lazy, hungry, indulgent, or celebratory. I've not seen this before and think the idea is so clever. Last week I got in from work super hungry and knocked up the dal in twenty minutes or so, and the depth of flavour was incredible for something so quick. There's a useful introduction to spices and suggested storecuobosdd ingredients to get you started. If you've not cooked a lot of Indian food before, you might spend a fair amount on stocking up on dry goods, but the ingredients will last you months and add new dimensions to your cooking. It would be hellpful to have a few more photographs in the book.I only hope Maunika is working on another book behind the scenes, if so I'll be the first to preorder.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN AUTHENTIC GEM

S.L. · 6 August 2017

Made Goan Prawn Caldinho and Punjabi Aloo Gobi last night for the second time, and wowed guests for the second time. I love cooking Indian food from scratch and my 'go to' cookbook has always been Tarla Dalal's 1983 'Indian Vegetarian Cookbook', but I've now added Maunika Gowardhan to my list. Uncomplicated yet authentic recipes for a variety of occasions using easy-to-find western ingredients. The Prawn and Aloo Gobi dishes are actually free to download from her website, but they simply gave me an appetite to discover more. The book does not disappoint and I'll be cooking many of them over the coming months and years. If I had one wish, it would be that there was a photograph of each dish and not just some of them, because photographs give us westerners an idea of what the finished dish would look like. But this is only a minor point, and will not stop me delving into this gem of a book again and again. Try out the plain boiled basmati rice. An internet search will bring up many many recipes for this staple dish, a lot of them very complicated with different ingredients added to stop the rice from becoming mushy. Yet Maunika's simple no-frills recipe gives me perfect rice in around 20 mins. A true gem of a find.

5.0 out of 5 stars The recipes really work!

P.V. · 22 May 2015

Indian food is difficult to trap into a recipe. The delicate balance of spices, the right heat to use at various times for the same dish, the long scary list of ingredients usually mean that most cook book writers take shortcuts and the food doesn't taste quite right.Indian Kitchen is thankfully not one of these books. Maunika takes pains over counting out cloves, and breaks down some of the most complicated dishes into approachable steps so that it really is possible to make traditional dishes taste as they should. My only grouse is the renaming of one of India's most iconic street food - Bombay sandwich - into the politically correct Mumbai sandwich. It's a fab selection of recipes from all over India and if you have never cooked or eaten Indian food before then this is a delicious introduction to the country's kitchens. I have been cooking Indian food for years and am really enjoying a new way with my spices. I cannot recommend this book enough!

Amazing cookbook that will teach you have to make fantastic, succulent, flavourful Indian dishes for yourself, family and guests

K.E. · 19 June 2016

I love this cookbook. All of the recipes are amazing. Maunika is a great chef and this cookbook is a masterpiece. If you live in Canada, you'll have to either order some of the ingredients online or go to an Indian grocery to get some of the ingredients - but it's well worth it. You can find many of the ingredients on Bolo - Jalpur sells them, and it's free shipping even though they are from the UK. Or, there's a spice merchant in Calgary that sells everything within Canada too. Stay away from the Bulk Barn - you want to make these dishes with great tasting ingredients.I have made at least 20 of the dishes in this book, and all of them are delicious. I am attaching several pictures of cooked recipes that directly came from this cookbook as evidence that the book is the real deal.
