Nice book with relevant content but rather small. Prefer Acute Medicine 2015 which is also pocket sized and more comprehensive as well as oxford handbook series for foundation docs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pocket-sized, to-the-point, relevant for junior doctor survival

Review from Foundation Year 2 trainee. This book is great to prepare Final Year Medical students during the short time between graduation and starting those early days as an on-call. It provides to-the-point notes on 4 sections: actually preparing for the on-call itself, assessing and treating acutely unwell patients, communication (e.g. the seniors, microbiologist) and situations (e.g. certification of death) in addition to prescribing common drugs/fluids on the ward. Rather than copious notes, the book provides details on the practicalities of being a junior doctor such as communication with senior colleagues for example and treating acutely unwell patients. Furthermore it contains illustrations and diagrams accompanied by boxes for key notes after a significant proportion of the sub-sections. It is actually pocket-sized and a shorter read compared to similar books on the market. I consider it as an adjunct to but not a replacement to the larger, lengthy and perhaps more comprehensive Oxford Handbook of Foundation Programme which probably serves for reference rather than for at-the-bedside practical use. I would recommend it my junior colleagues and wish I had it before I started my first on-call.Conflict of Interest: I am a book reviewer for CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group and received this book free.
