Ancient Wisdom for the Care of Souls: Learning the Art of Pastoral Ministry from the Church Fathers

Description:

Recovering the Wisdom of Early Christian Figures to Effectively Shepherd Modern Churches

In addition to the regular demands of preaching and shepherding, modern pastors feel undue pressure to entertain congregants and increase attendance numbers. Often, churches resort to the latest business models to keep pace. But true, life-giving guidance lies in Scripture and the wisdom of those having come before us.

Ancient Wisdom for the Care of Souls helps pastors to embrace a classic, biblical vision of ministry through the study of selected pastoral virtues and early church figures. Gregory of Nyssa and Gregory the Great both referred to ministry as “the care of souls.” Calling for a “return to the sources,” professors Coleman M. Ford and Shawn J. Wilhite ponder what a scriptural vision of ministry is, how patristic voices help inform this vision, and how pastors today can cultivate this pastoral vision in their churches. Each chapter examines an important pastoral topic―such as humility, the sacraments, and contemplative theology―and brings it to life through a constructive model and profiles of early church fathers. Encouraged by the patristic wisdom of Irenaeus, Athanasius, John Chrysostom, and more, readers learn a simple and slower model for pastoring that they can emulate as they care for their communities. A slower pace of life may, in fact, help pastors cultivate the soil of souls more richly and, as a result, return to ministry as “the care of souls.”

  • Theological and Historical: Features detailed profiles of church fathers, including Ambrose of Milan, Augustine, Gregory of Nazianzus, Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nyssa, and others
  • Written for Students and Pastors: Ideal for college-level courses, as well as new or seasoned ministers

Review:

Top choice for pastors

M. · 26 February 2025

Though not a pastor I found this book very helpful and plan to pass it on to my pastor. Its general helpfulness is that so much that goes into the care of souls depends on Christian character. The early church fathers are full of wisdom for living the Christian life. By harnessing these truths and deepening their own walk with the Lord pastors can help themselves and their flock. There is an excellent list of primary and secondary sources at the end to further direct your study depending on what is most needful for your particular needs. By all means if you pastor take time to read this and then begin that deeper study.

For Pastors

Pastors, this is a MUST BUY. So stop being cheap and buy the book. It’s written for you, and is very principled in what a pastor should be, explaining through historical figures. - enjoy.

Breadcrumb trail of wisdom from the Fathers

D.M. · 24 September 2024

The church fathers can feel distant and intimidating. This book gives us a breadcrumb trail to follow so we don't get lost along the way.Lots of practical, soul-nourishing wisdom on shepherding. My biggest takeaway is the suggested reading - I want to dive deeper into the lives and writings of the fathers!

Excellent review of Soul Care by the Shepherds of the Church

D. · 13 August 2024

These two men have given us a treasure of the materials and writings of several church fathers that strips away 21st Century "busy-ness" and deals with our role in the care of souls. It reflects the statement by the late Eugene Peterson, "How can I lead people into a quiet place beside still waters if I am in perpetual motion?" The books is divided into the three main ways we care for souls and they brings forth the teachings and example of great church Fathers who exemplify this soul care.

Insightful, but relies too heavily on secondary sources

T.H. · 3 October 2024

If I want to learn the art of pastoral ministry from the church fathers, I would expect the actual writings of the church fathers to be prominently featured. However, what this book gives the reader is some primary citation (in English translation) with a lot of secondary summarization and characterization. Instead of reading what the church fathers actually wrote about the topic, we learn what the authors and other patristic scholars think about what the church fathers wrote.Consequently, I found this resource insightful but not exactly as advertised.
