5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Church-building Tool
This book is a simply written, but insightful introduction to a much-neglected area. As churches function more and more in the context of a culture which is emphatically post-Christian, the way in which we identify who represents Jesus and his teaching becomes more and more pressing. This is a great start, a practical help, and a thought-provoking launch-pad for further reflection.
4.0 out of 5 stars Always worth reading
9 Marks material is always worth reading. Especially for Baptists as we are persistently poor on our understanding of the church.
3.0 out of 5 stars Readable and engaging but I’m not sure it would persuade a floater
Leeman’s best work here is in his box outs as there are clear scriptural evidences given for his points. The main flow of his argument relies heavily on illustrations like the local church being an embassy of the kingdom. I am a big believer in the local church so am a sympathetic audience but many believers I interact with are happy to be church hoppers and identify only with the universal church. Many arguments Leeman adduced in my humble opinion really just reinforce the universal church idea so wouldn’t shift them from their privatism and piety. The most compelling axis for me is the one that connects responsibility for (whole church/elders for members) to accountability to (members to elders and the whole church).
Very Helpful
If your church is trying to discern what membership should look like, this book is an invaluable resource. It is a very quick read. I recommend that you have all of your church leaders read at least chapter 1.
Very clear and concise reasoning that explains church membership
Well written and easy to follow logic that is supported by Scripture. Hopefully it would support all churches to be united in some of the core ordinances Jesus has made know through the Bible.
Short 9 Marks Series book, but a worthwhile read
The 9 Marks Series brings us a great little book by Jonathan Leeman dealing with the issue of Church Membership. In today's culture most people don't want to "commit" to much of anything. As a matter of fact church "membership" is on the decline in all denominations. It is not that necessarily because attendance is dropping, but membership is dropping. People are not as committed to denominational ties nor are they as committed to a local body of believers as they should be. Why is that?I think part of the issue is that they don't want to commit because then the local body of believers will hold them "accountable" for their walk with Christ. The second issue is, if I become a member then they are going to ask me to get more involved on a church board, while maybe true, that is not the only reason to become a church member. The picture of membership is a bigger picture than most Christians today realize. It is affirming your belief in the Lord Jesus as your Lord and Savior and committing yourself to a local body of believers for growth, nurture, accountability and discipleship. There are many Biblical reasons for membership and Leeman does a good job of bringing those together and pointing them out for those who are attending a local church.I believe that every Christian, either layman or professional clergy will benefit from reading through this short book. Don't let church membership be a stumbling block for attending consistently a local church, instead read through this work, pray about it and come to realize why it is for your benefit and the benefit of the larger Body of Christ for you to become a "church Member".Enjoy!
insightful
Leeman explains church membership from the scriptures. He does so in a way that is tactfully simple, yet deeply rooted ancient truths.
... all the books I've read in this series are excellent. Concise
So far all the books I've read in this series are excellent. Concise, readable, practical and deep.
