THE SUNDAY TIMES AND NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

"Welcome to the family," Nina Winchester says as I shake her elegant, manicured hand. I smile politely, gazing around the marble hallway. Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I'll soon learn that the Winchesters' secrets are far more dangerous than my own . . .

Every day I clean the Winchesters' beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor.

I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew's handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it's hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina's life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband.

I only try on one of Nina's pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it's like. But she soon finds out... and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it's far too late.

But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don't know who I really am.

They don't know what I'm capable of . . .

An unbelievably twisty read that will have you glued to the pages late into the night. Anyone who loves The Woman in the Window, The Wife Between Us and The Girl on the Train won't be able to put this down!

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy read and easy storyline

S.L. · 14 May 2025

Admittedly, the start of this book confused me, and I was suspicious of everyone initially, especially the very nice husband. It was a good, easy read, and the twists and turns kept you entertained throughout. The ending reminded me of the women related to Aqua Tofana (Google it). The later part of the book had my eyes rolling as the maids reason for being in jail is revealed and why she was hired etc.Overall pretty good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging and Thrilling!

This is one of my favourite stories by Freida McFadden. The main character, Millie, is an interesting individual and initially, you wonder what she did to be in prison for 10 years. This becomes clear later in the story. However, even though she has been in prison, you are routing for her throughout. The other characters, such as Nina and Andy also have intriguing personalities and I was keen to find out what would happen next in the story. There are some great twists, but not so many that it feels too unbelievable, and the tension really builds up well throughout the story with an engaging plot. Some parts were upsetting and some shocking; it kept me on the edge of my seat throughout!

5.0 out of 5 stars original and gripping

I really enjoyed this story. McFadden drip feeds us information little by little with a pace that is just right to keep the reader enthralled. A very entertaining read with well developed characters and a unique and exciting plot.

3.0 out of 5 stars Readable... Just about

D. · 8 September 2024

Picked up this book as it had glowing reviews as a psychological thriller with plenty of twists, however I struggled a bit to get through it. For most of the book it reads more like a cheap closed door romance with characters who come across as caricatures rather than real people, implausible storylines, and bimbotic narration. I kept plowing through mostly as the blurb and reviews said there were twists so I was hoping for something spectacular to warrant the many 5 stars it received but was left feeling disappointed. The twists were simultaneously predictable and absurd, and everything was tied up far too neatly with the aid of yet another unbelievabley convenient plot device that just felt like lazy writing. The overall premise was interesting but the quality of the writing really let it down for me... Smarter characters who actually orchestrated their own revenge rather than benefitting from unrealistic and poorly explained strokes of luck would have carried this book, but as it was I was I was left wondering why I bothered finishing it.The narration was also a major annoyance, I realise with first person narrative you have to use the characters voice which can limit the complexity of vocabulary used, and requires simplified language when the character is uneducated... But this was only the case for one of our narrators. The second was well educated and should have had a different voice, and to me it was simply poor writing that she spoke to the reader in the same vernacular and displayed the same limited comprehension as the first narrator. This is honestly a huge bug bear of mine with authors who choose to use first person POV but use the same voice for all characters.Honestly I'd say this book is perfectly fine brainless reading for a holiday read or simply to kill time, but it won't be one that stays with me or which I'd bother to recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Page Turner

I only added this book to my basket at the last minute as I was buying another book for holiday and this was to be a back up if the other one wasn't any good. Well I read the first chapter of this one first and for the next couple of days I was hooked it's a very addictive story full of twists and turns. Not normally the sort of book I normally go for but I'm glad to have expanded my reading horizons. I would highly recommend this and would read more books from same author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Plot seems implausible but it kept me hooked

I can't remember what was the trigger to buy this book but it seems to review well (and has sold huge numbers). I think I may have confused it with The Maid but I liked the sound of this book so decided to give it a go. By the look of the cover it's going to be great.I'd not heard of the author but was interested in her combination of medical and psychological thriller writing as careers. I was also impressed with her long list of novels. This book has 328 pages split into 61 chapters and was first published in 2022.From the start it is clear that something awful has happened. We are then taken back a few months to find out what. There are plenty of secrets and some very weird events. The readers senses are heightened and there is a lot of suggestion. The narrative starts looking from Millie's perspective - she is very cautious of her environment although is not an innocent party which adds plenty of layers. The concept of the plot is tight with a small cast of characters making it an unchallenging book to read but there are enough twists to keep the attention all the way through.Gradually the story moves along, all the time keeping enough tension to make you think it is all going to go wrong at any moment. The prologue has introduced the idea of a body in the attic but there is a lot to be discovered before the book gets to that.Complexity is added and, whilst it all seems implausible, I did get hooked in and I loved the ending. It seemed unlikely that this book is going to be developed into a series but that is what has happened and I'm definitely going to get the next one.

A gripping page turner!

E.F. · 16 June 2025

This was a fascinating story with several curveball twists. I anticipated a couple of them but there were always several more. I found myself laughing at times even though this is a far from humorous story, particularly towards the end. I am impressed with the authors ability to create such a complex plot and weave such interesting characters together in one story. I read the book in two days!

A book full of twists and turns that keeps you hooked until the very end! English is my second language, but the story is still easy to follow and understand—yet it never fails to surprise you along the way. If you’re an English learner who loves psychological thrillers, I highly recommend it!
