Sports Science: A complete introduction (Teach Yourself)

Description:

Human beings have always sought ways to gain a competitive edge over their opponents, but sports science is a relatively young discipline. So what is it all about, and how can it help athletes perform better?

Sports science is the application of scientific principles to explain sporting phenomena and provide a basis for improving the performance of teams and individuals. In this comprehensive yet easy-to-use introduction, you will learn everything you need to know about it in one place, including the key research and current knowledge, providing you with a well-informed starting point in your study of this fascinating subject.

The focus of the book is on the three disciplines of biomechanics, physiology and psychology:

-
Biomechanics: using mechanical principles to understand human movement and how the human body interacts with equipment and apparatus
-
Physiology: using biological sciences to investigate how the body responds to exercise and training
-
Psychology: using psychological principles to provide answers to questions about human behaviour in sports settings

This new edition has been updated to include case studies to show what you can do with a sports science degree and advice on how to prepare for careers where sports science knowledge is used. It includes chapters on the key systems in the body - skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and nervous - as well as covering sports nutrition and planning research in sport.

Whether you are a student, interested in sport and sport performance as a professional practice, or involved in sport at any level,

4.0 out of 5 stars Good:)

The textbook is quite good quality, pages aren’t very thick but I wouldn’t say they’re too thin either. Regarding the actual content of the book, I haven’t gotten too far through the book yet, but I’ve had a flick through and a number of topics are covered which is good, diagrams so far are good, but some information is a little vague, for example, in the vertebrae section it talks about curvatures of the spine but doesn’t actually say what kind of curves there are and which sections of the spine they occur in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good text book

This is a recommended text book for the OU Sport and Fitness course I started this month. It will be needed for a lot of study. One chapter has featured in the first modules.

Very simple to understand with great details, I’m about to study Sport Science in Bath University and this book helps me a lot to prepare on what will be coming up in the course.Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, it's packed with information, a pleasant read, including the biomechanics part!

A.R. · 30 December 2017

I loved the way this book is written, simple, easy to understand, by being written in lovely sections and paragraphs with excellent explanations. Some parts I skimmed over as it was very basic, but, when it comes to the more complex parts the simple explanations are very welcomed, so much so there so feeling the author wants the reader to not only enjoy the book, fully understand it too.At end of each chapter I like the, 'Dig Deeper' where suggestions of great websites or links to further learnings and book recommendations. Last page of each chapter has a 'Fast Check' multiple choice questions, answers at back of book. It's worth buying this book just for the brilliant explanations throughout, the biomechanics section; the writing is as simple as can be, in such a deep subject! There's lots of sketches to help grasp each section. The nutrition part was more than I expected, there is a lot of information packed into this book. I'd highly recommend this to anyone curious, students, teachers, anyone interested in sports and therapist! It's a refreshing way of reading this subject!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Generally good, but could be more accurate.

B.K. · 2 January 2021

Generally a good book with all the key information & concepts covered to a decent level. Only concern is there are several errors dotted around the book. I’ve only read up to pg 47 have noticed spelling errors & some ‘loose’ language - ‘weak acids raise the PH of the blood’, they don’t.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Sport and Exercise Science
