Over time Ian Rankin has managed the change in circumstances of his creation well: different crimes, different criminals, different policing, different Scotland – same Rebus? 2024 finds him in poor health, nearing 70 and in prison. I got lost in this book. The plots intertwine, a tweak and a coincidence to nudge them along but nothing implausible. The characters, most well-known now, interact and play out their parts convincingly. What makes Rankin such a good writer is that the characters tell the story themselves, his command of dialogue is unsurpassed. His novels are driven by communication. You see this world, can see this world only through the eyes of Rebus, Clarke, Fox. He also has an eye for the incidental: a minor character is the prison librarian who reveals herself in a flush of excitement when a violent altercation sends the books flying and her heart panting. I expect more from Meghan Keighley. The ending is as always with Rebus a beginning. For how much longer?
5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book
Low price and a great read. I love the Rebus series.
4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent although there was confusion with number of people
A very different Rebus story that was enjoyable but the number of characters became confusing. Nicely wrapped up at the end.
5.0 out of 5 stars Midnight and Blue
Brilliant read. So great to have Rebus back with another case even though he' s banged up with Darrel Cristie, his old adversary. The old Rebus is back doing what he does best, solving crime. Can't wait for the next book now when he's released from prison.
5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing turns and twists
Amazing, couldn’t put it down. Was sceptical, couldn’t see where story would be in prison but the characters were there, good and bad. If this was the last Rebus it was a triumph.
5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant as usual.
I love the Rebus novels, I have been reading them as soon as they come out but Midnight and Blue is excellent I could didn't want to put it down.
4.0 out of 5 stars Stick with it
Was a slow start and took sometime to get into this story. All the usual characters are here and some new.The storyline was a slow burner put then it all clicked into place and got really interesting, with results at the end not expected.Worth reading if a rebus fan
5.0 out of 5 stars 1st class
A different side to Rebus, banged up in prison with many of those he put away. How will she survive and who will be his allies and who does he need to look out for? What will his future be? A must read.
Another cracking read
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } Even with Rebus serving time, the storyline is a cracker. Well written, tight with a good pace to it, as well as some great subplots, I feel this series is as strong as ever and as good as crime writing gets. Loved the end and can’t wait for the next one!
(English version) D I Rebus in prison... ?!
D I Rebus in prison... ?! Takes a bit of getting used to, but he hasn't changed much! The plot is genius, the dialogue crisp and snappy, the characters superbly written. It's Rebus, it's Rankin, so all's good.... as good in fact as the very first, Knots and Crosses, and all those in between.
Pure Genius.
Just finished Midnight and Blue by Sir lan Rankin. Exquisite writing skills as always, tremendous plot and so tight...not a wasted word.Brilliant. One of favourites of the year.
Rebus more alive than ever
Even if you think the story is told out Rankin finds a new plot to tell and keep Rebus going. One of the best crime writers ever.
The best Rebus novel in years
I had almost given up on Ian Rankin after what I found to be very mediocre novels over the past few years, especially the Rebus book that preceded this one. But I'm very glad I stuck with him because this definitely one of the best in the whole series. Vintage Rankin/Rebus and excellent characterisation.
