5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Rebus, approaching 70, is in prison for the murder of Big Ger Cafferty. Being ignored by his lawyers, threatened by a villain he once arrested, who still holds a grudge, and generally missing his freedom, his investigative instincts kick in when one of the inmates is murdered.Meanwhile, on the outside, his old colleagues and friends, DI Siobhan Clarke and DS Christine Esson, are investigating a teenage girl's disappearance, online porn, and the murder of the porn website's owner.Well written and fast paced, with strong characters, intrigue, and a constant atmosphere of danger. Well worth reading.
4.0 out of 5 stars Too many characters
Great read as always, just too many characters. I got confused t ok many times about who was who. But that could be just me.
5.0 out of 5 stars Rankin at the top of his game
Rebus is in prison, convicted of the attempted murder of long-time nemesis Big Ger Cafferty. He’s is protected on the wing by another old adversary, Darrell Christie, but when an other inmate is murdered in his cell the old detective instincts kick in. And why is the organised crime unit’s Malcolm Fox so interested in the killing?Meanwhile on the outside Siobhan Clarke is investigating the disappearance of a 14-year-old schoolgirl. So, all the characters we’ve grown familiar with are present and correct. Reading this is like slipping into a pair of old, comfortable shoes. There are some quite dark themes here and for Rebus a dangerous line to walk between the two sides of the law. Although the detective’s physical powers are declining he retains his uncanny ability to sniff out injustice. The prison scenes are particularly well drawn, the uneasy alliances and informal hierarchy, the threats lurking never far from the surface. The plot keeps you gripped though I did feel that the ending felt a little hurried. That aside this is Rankin at the top of his game.
5.0 out of 5 stars Another "stonking" good read from the Master of Scottish Crime Writing.
An excellent book. Mr Rankin has nailed it once again. I cannot wait for the next episode of the Rebus saga.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - Rebus is back!
Excellent ‘late’ Rebus, he finallyhas found his mojoagain! Fast paced , smart story, typical Rebus humor - much better than the one’s before
4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent although there was confusion with number of people
A very different Rebus story that was enjoyable but the number of characters became confusing. Nicely wrapped up at the end.
5.0 out of 5 stars Usual excellence!
A gripping, well crafted plot with all the old loved charachters enhanced by a few new ones. Clark and Esson make a sympathetic team with an up to date outlook. Will they take over Rebus' crown? I have grown old alongside Rebus, so I hope there will be opportunity for his input still. As usual, I can't wait to see what the next book holds.Ian Rankin is always at the top of his game, only equalled by Michael Connelly.
3.0 out of 5 stars ok
Having read them all, I was a bit disappointed with this one. I am fairly sure that this is largely because I have spent so many years with the Rebus novels so the style, the biggest attraction, has lost its shine through familiarity. Something of the 'same old, same old'.Certainly, there was the usual pleasure to be had from 'being around' Rebus et al. Plenty of character and plot intrigue, though regarding the latter I felt the story fizzles out to achieve neatness. I thought it a bit weak too on setting. While Rankin is great a brush-stroking details to evoke location thickness without a need for too much detail, here I felt the prison was just 'a' prison and not 'this particular' prison'.I'm about the same age as Rebus now so there's a lot of 'been there, seen that'. Maybe time for him to retire with his music to somewhere like St Mary Mead, spend more time with daughter, granddaughter and dog. Doubtless, were he to do so, bodies would turn up in vicarages, libraries and - probably - the little museum. And the place would be swamped with drugs and shady characters from Liverpool. By coincidence, a broken, alcoholic Malcolm Fox would hide out in a cottage there, and some sort of intimacy between him and Rebus will grow, structured similarly to that between Rebus and Big Ger....
Another cracking read
Even with Rebus serving time, the storyline is a cracker. Well written, tight with a good pace to it, as well as some great subplots, I feel this series is as strong as ever and as good as crime writing gets. Loved the end and can’t wait for the next one!
bloody copper
Classic rebus. Well written and well played. A difficult read but well worth the plot, the twists, the writing. The characters are well established but also multifaceted and complicated. Always a satisfactory / excellent read.
wonderful author
I have quite a few of his books and love the story telling, always an exciting page turner. Highly recommend his books.
The best Rebus novel in years
I had almost given up on Ian Rankin after what I found to be very mediocre novels over the past few years, especially the Rebus book that preceded this one. But I'm very glad I stuck with him because this definitely one of the best in the whole series. Vintage Rankin/Rebus and excellent characterisation.
