The Oxford Revise Guide for Unseen Poetry is really good. My daughter has used it for some of her GCSE revision and has found it helpful. We've not seen one on Unseen Poetry before, so this was also really helpful to have. The colourful pages are a bonus (unlike some revise guides that are just black and white). The guide is obviously quite text heavy which is to be expected but it is broken down into chunks via boxes on the pages.I think this is a great revise guide and I'd really recommend the series

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommeded

4. · 1 May 2025

My daughter has never used this series of revision study aids before, plumping for rival (almost standard bearer) which is highly regarded. Having seen a series of these books, she has admitted these are equally good. These are divided into three sections, Knowledge, Retrieval and Practice. The knowledge organiser part explains the key information needed for success, the retrieval sections check what you have learnt in the first part and the third section gives exam-style questions to ensure you are exam ready. Sample answers and marks schemes as well as a glossary containing definitions of the key terms are all available online (links or QR codes provided to be followed). The blurb states that these are written by experienced subject matter teachers and cognitive science experts. The content and layout of these books is proof of this, this series is highly recommended, in my opinion. The Unseen Poetry is beautifully crafted, I wish such a textbook was made available when I was studying for my ‘O’ levels! I particularly like the way sample answers are provided which demonstrate weaker possible answers against stronger ones. These helps the candidate plan to structure responses better. This is further complemented by the, ‘Examiner’s Comments’ where the reader appreciates better what it is that the examiner is looking for to attain top marks. This is an excellent book to support you through your AQA GCSE English Literature, cannot recommend it highly enough 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars High praise as it’s actually getting used!

S. · 2 May 2025

Lots of study guides I buy just seem to just end up collecting dust, but the fact my son is actually using this book shows its worth. It breaks unseen poem analysis down into knowledge, retrieval and practice. Through each of these sections it has helpful exam tips, revision tips, key terms, highlighted ‘remember’ points and also cross-links backs to other relevant pages. The book format can at first seem a bit overwhelming, so it’s worth spending a bit of time reading the “How to use this book” section and not skipping straight through this like we first did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good revision guide with good practice exercises

M. · 28 April 2025

The physical book itself is of okay quality and the pages are a bit thin - I would therefore not allow my less careful students to handle it. However, it is a really good revision guide with practice exercises which both lead and push students into thinking carefully about the poems and their themes. I particularly like the examples which show clearly the difference between what the book labels "lower-level point" and "higher-level point" answers. They way they are laid out will encourage all students, even those who need a bit more motivation, to work as much as possible towards the higher-level answers.

5.0 out of 5 stars great

C. · 10 May 2025

This guide matches the AQA exam style. The strategies for picking out key themes and techniques are very useful, and the comparison section is brilliant. I went from struggling to write a full analysis to scoring high marks in my mocks.
