I was looking for a nice complete works of Shakespeare to have in the house and I am very happy with this one. I wanted something classy but which also had appropriate annotations and notes. This one is perfect because tricky words and context are explained on the page and brief introductions are given for each play (not too long but just right) as well as stage directions for historical RSC plays. The writing is somewhat small and the pages are thin but this is not a major complaint given the size of the volume (good for weights!). Very happy for the price level!

This is the best Complete Shakespeare you will find anywhere. Besides a superb text, a lot of valuable editorial material and some beautiful photos of past RSC productions.And well printed on good quality paper. This is a book which will outlast your great-grandchildren. It can indeed be regarded as the successor to the First Folio. Not cheap but good value.The Preface is a bit over the top, trying to insert too much of our time into the Bard, but I forgive that!

A gift from my wife. Timely delivery. Arrived in perfect condition. A beautiful edition. I love it. The illustrations are a particularly nice addition I think. It evokes memories of our visits to Stratford upon Avon, Shakespeare at Tolthorpe Hall and also the pop up Rose Theatre at Blenheim Palace. A book I will treasure always and delve into often.

The first edition of this CW was great. My hope was that the 2nd edition would be stellar. Where it went wrong is the increased size (cut of paper and covers), increased weight, increased amount of photography of past RSC productions (why is this useful for any serious reader? This should be saved for a section of the RSC website alone), and worst of all is reduced font size. The legibility is seriously tough, and I'm in my 30's with excellent eyesight. The one thing this edition made better was employing two gold ribbon markers, as opposed to none in the first printing of the 1st edition, followed by one ribbon in subsequent printings of the 1st edition. Overall? Such a shame. As Shakespeare lovers, actors, theatre makers...we don't need more bulk and glitz. We need clarity, simplicity, grace, and function.

Royal Shakespeare Company -- William Shakespeare Complete Works Second EditionFirst of all, realize that this book is pretty substantial in size and weight, but it is the best single volume collection of Shakespeare's plays that I have found.Some notes about the formatting:* This volume is single column vs the more typical two column layouts one sees in older works. Which works really well even for those sections which are structured as poetry. It adds a pleasing white space on each page.* The font has a more modern feel with character names in a bold non-serifed typeface. The text itself is serifed, but it has very clean lines. Older texts that have the muddy, tired fonts are, to me, somewhat a hinderance to just enjoying the plays themselves.* The additional white space including a decent margin are great for making notations, although I am not certain whether the paper thinness will cause bleed through.* The page headings include the name of the play and the act and scene number.* Beautiful color plates at the beginning of the book showing scenes from Royal Shakespeare Company productions* Text notes are clean, brief, and unobtrusive on the page, with no distracting reference symbol in the text itself.I've seen a couple reviews that mention 2 gold ribbon markers. My edition has only one.Sewn binding. Board covers.I also appreciated the inclusion of Shakespeare's poetry.

Very clear text, good font, well presented, I like this edition for study. The paper is not the best, little grey, thin and a bit rough, like recycled paper, not my favorite, but fits all in one volume. I needed an easy font to read, and it does the job.

One of the best complete Shakespeare works

I have owned other books which are complete words of Shakespeare in the past. This version is by far the best that I have come across. My main complaints about those was that the print was so fine even with reading glasses It was difficult to read. It was smaller than some versions of Bibles that I have seen. This publishers version as small print but it is easy to read with a pair of reading glasses. It also includes background information and footnotes about each play and photos from the Royal Shakespeare company which are a big bonus to me. If you are looking for a volume containing the complete works of Shakespeare this is definitely one that is worth a look.
