4.0 out of 5 stars A useful reference book by The Nutrition Society offering a full Introduction to Human Nutrition

J.B.S. · 9 March 2020

“Introduction to Human Nutrition” is a textbook from the The Nutrition Society and is aimed more at students than a general readership interested in their diet. The book's authors are Susan A. Lanham from the University of Surrey in Guildford, Thomas R. Hill is a Professor at Newcastle University, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Alison M. Gallagher is from Ulster University in Coleraine, Northern Ireland and Hester H. Vorster is from North-West University at Potchefstroom in South Africa – all have academic backgrounds in nutrition. This version of The Nutrition Society's “Introduction to Human Nutrition” benefits from the “Look Inside” feature on the book's Bolo Product Page that will let you have a good look at the contents and layout, like you could in a bookshop, and this may help you to decide whether the book's very detailed and academic format may appeal to you or not. This book is nicely produced and well illustrated with this Paperback version running to 488 pages - this third edition of “Introduction to Human Nutrition” from the The Nutrition Society was published by Wiley-Blackwell on the 5th of December 2019 so the information included is completely up-to-date. Priced as a professional reference book at around forty-two pounds for the Paperback version currently from Bolo with the Kindle Edition being a couple of pounds less. Recommended to anyone with an interest in studying human nutrition, but of rather limited appeal to a more general readership. Four stars for the production values and illustrations at the price – but as a reference work it offers a lot of information on a rather specialist subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars very comprehensive and detailed course book

J.C. · 16 March 2020

This book is aimed at students of the medical professions, but I think many others too will find it interesting as I have. Over the last 5 years I've had to negotiate my way through adjusting our diet to correct for pre-diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis and continence issues with very little useful help from the local health service. Wish I'd had this book earlier. It's not intended for the mass market, but having done human biology at AO level 40 years ago, I found I can understand most of it.Good quality, slightly glossy paper, slightly bigger than some books at 25.5cm tall by 20.5cm wide. The body text is about TimesRoman 10pt, with captions and headings in sans serif. Nice clear diagrams and illustrations of relevant information. 471 pages including 16 pages of index. The index is at the back and references at the end of each chapter. For students, there is a companion website with multi-choice and essay questions available as exam prep. With so much nonsense talked about in the media I'm glad to have this book on the shelf for reference.£42.21

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed textbook on nutrition

U.r. · 13 March 2020

This book is aimed at students and people working in the nutrition field (I would say the style and content is too academic to be of interest in a casual reader who just wants to improve their diet). This book not only covers the basic of nutrition it also covers topics such as government policy, food safety and nutrition research. The book is very detailed and comprehensive but is also set out in a way that it makes it easy to dip into.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource

M.H.✔. · 21 May 2020

Really great book on human nutrition - I'm not a professional but did begin on the path of becoming a professional nutrition some years back before starting a family too my attention on a different route which in turn then led to a new career elsewhere, but I still dedicate a lot of time to nutritional health for myself and immediate family (both in study and application) as well as these days nearly all my friends and extended family! So I really enjoyed reading through this, reaffirming many things I have already studied and researched and teaching me a fair amount of new leanings also. This is of course geared more towards students and new professionals in the field of nutrition though and as such is brilliant on that front as it's packed with very good information which is very well indexed and referenced as well as being a great quality, well produced resource book. Much of the text focuses on the wider current understanding of food and nutrition and covers everything from food composition and dietary reference standards and critical assessment of nutrition in terms of health goals and outcomes to phytochemicals and contemporary challenges of global food safety with good information/sections on supplements (which was the part I enjoyed most as a non professional), digestion and nutrient absorption - very interesting and very practical/helpful whether you;re a professional or on a personal level and a great reference book to have on the shelf..

5.0 out of 5 stars aimed at students

P.o.j. · 12 March 2020

ok so this book is aimed at students in this field of work , however i have to say despite the fact i am not i am finding this a very useful and really very interesting book to read. its format wont suit everyone thats for sure as it does feel like you are studying but its well laid out in plain speak and is easy to dip into when youre looking for certain information. i feel this is well worth a read even if youre not a student. we could all learn something to make us healthier for sure.
