Cold War ‘Top Gun’: A Career Flying Fast-Jets With the USAF, GAF and the RAF

Description:

In November 1981, Alan Dyer-Perry returned to the UK after a successful exchange tour with the USAF, having flown 2,900 hours on iconic British and American strike/attack aircraft, including the English Electric Canberra, Blackburn Buccaneer, and General Dynamics F-111A. Praised for his cool and unassuming approach to aviation, Dyer-Perry was optimistic about his future, expecting a rapid rise in rank. He then took on a new challenge as flight commander of the RAF’s prestigious 617 Squadron, the Dambusters, where he managed a team flying the Tornado GR 1. Despite his earlier success, he quickly learned to set aside his assumed superiority and adapt to the squadron's unique culture. Under his leadership, the squadron won both the Curtis E. LeMay and John C. Meyer trophies in a USAF bombing competition. Later, as a NATO tactics instructor and operations wing commander at RAF Cottesmore, Dyer-Perry honed his tactical skills and gained insight into high command challenges. His career culminated as the Senior RAF Liaison Officer at HQ 3 Air Force, USAF, where he worked on various issues, including during the Balkans War and after the 9/11 attacks. This autobiography chronicles the journey of a dedicated aviator who flew nearly 4,000 hours in some of the world’s best aircraft.

This autobiography about the author's career in the Royal Air Force as a fast-jet navigator was, for me, a really excellent read. It stands out because it lacks the tiresome "gung ho" bravado of some similar memoires; because it speaks in depth about the aeroplanes themselves (the author explains exactly why the F-15E is a superior fighter-bomber in the low-level ground attack role to the Tornado or Buccaneer, he doesn't just tell us it is....he describes the other aeropanes he flew in, a wide range of RAF and NATO jets, in similar ways); and because it is so honest. This honesty extends to himself as well as to other topics. When the author's career took him into desk jobs, his description of the mind-numbing bureaucracy and tedium of the working environment and some of his colleagues will resonate with many an "office worker"; likewise his critique of the management consulting industry and the millions wasted by the Ministry of Defence on consultants - again, something many of us in wider industry can relate to! These environments, for someone who thrived flying in fast jets, were not ones the author appeared to enjoy. The author was clearly not as good at "office politics" as some of his peers, but I surmise that's one of the reasons this book is such a good read - it is refreshingly open and honest, and written with generosity of spirit. And, to get back to why people other than immediate family and friends buy these kinds of books, it sticks closely to talking about the aeroplanes and their mission. And that's what we "enthusiasts" want to read about the most! Highly recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not particularly exciting, but a good read.

Dyer-Perry has written an interesting book, and the most apt description l would give it is workmanlike. The book describes his career as an RAF navigator on Canberras, Buccaneers and Tornados, with an exchange tour to the US on F111s. He almost, but not quite falls into that pitfall where the reader thinks "well he's written this just by looking at his flying logbook", nor does he fall into the other trap of just listing the people and social shenanigans that took place. Particularly interesting is the preparation undertaken to enter the SAC Bomb Competition, although in the back of my mind l seem to remember rather more covert 'preparation' took place than what he describes! 4000 odd hours in fast jets is not to be sneezed at, but his later career feels like too much hard work to me! I felt a sense of foreboding the whole time, waiting for him to take over a desk permanently! l do feel that the subtitle is a slight misnomer though, as his German Air Force flying was a sort of private, rather than formal arrangement.

A good read. Very detailed. Gives a glimpse of RAF aviator life from the 1970s to the early 2000s, covering the progression in technology from the Canberra through the Buccaneer to the Tornado very well.
