Ayurvedic Massage: Traditional Indian Techniques for Balancing Body and Mind

Description:

About this item:

Ayurvedic Massageis the first book on the subject, and the first new massage therapy introduced to the West since shiatsu. One of the oldest systems of medicine in the world, Ayurveda views the human being as intimately connected with the environment and all other life forms. Ayurvedic massage works on both the physical and mental levels, transmitting a life-giving energy that assists all systems of the body to repair and renew themselves. Practitioners concentrate on the marmas, subtle energy points that respond to gentle physical manipulation, and work with the needs of the different body types. The author guides both the novice and experienced practitioner through each step in the full body massage and explains which oils work best for particular body types.

Review

"For Harish Johari--artist, composer, chef, teacher, tantric devotee--desire is the brush, and the five senses are the palette." ― Yoga Journal

"Harish Johari served as guide to Richard Alpert (Baba Ram Dass) on his initial excursion into mystic India and continues his vocation of bridging the East/West gap. A true renaissance man, this distinguished north Indian poet, sculptor, and musician holds degrees in philosophy and literature." ―
East West Journal

"In
Ayurvedic Massage, author Harish Johari combines a variety of cultural, yogic and Ayurvedic concepts together to spin his tale about massage. In doing so he is able to bring to light the concept of marmas (pressure points) and speculate on how these antecedents of Chinese acupuncture points may be helpful in stimulating the body's own healing powers." ― Massage Magazine

"Johari writes about this complex subject in a simple and easy-to-follow manner." ―
Aromatic Thymes

"Harish Johari's
Ayurvedic Massage is an informative and easy-to-read introduction to the world of oil massage as daily ritual, exercise, relaxation, preventative, and healing practice." ― Massage Therapy Journal

"
Ayurvedic Massage offers massage therapists a taste of an approach they might want to pursue through more training. It can be a source of enlivening your present practice with a different perspective. An accessible introduction that is well worth reading, with instructions massage therapists could easily follow." ― Mirka Knaster, Massage Therapy Journal

"Harish Johari is Ayurveda's renaissance man." ―
Yoga Journal

HEALTH / MASSAGE One of the oldest systems of medicine in the world, Ayurveda views the human being as intimately connected with the environment and all other life-forms. As this healing art evoloved, massage practitioners who were also Ayurvedic doctors developed a special system based on their own understandings of the needs of specific body types and their knowledge of the marmas, subtle energy points that respond to gentle physical manipulation. Providing a comprehensive introduction to Ayurvedic massage, this is the first book to make these techniques available to both the novice and the more experienced massage practitioner. Ayurvedic massage works on both the physical and mental levels, transmitting a life-giving energy that assists all systems of the body to repair and renew themselves. If enjoyed on a regular basis, it can relieve muscular tension, tone the body, restore agility to stiff joints, and stop premature aging and wrinkling. In clear and accessible language, author Harish Johari guides the reader through each step in the full-body massage, explaining what oils work best for particular body types and showing how to relieve imbalances and stimulate self-healing. More than 115 beautiful drawings illustrate his techniques. He also gives instructions for using massage during pregnancy and labor as well as after delivery to provide the new mother with an extra measure of support and comfort, and he follows up with a section on massaging the newborn baby. An additional chapter on therapeutic massage outlines special techniques and natural remedies for treating specific disorders, including arthritis, rheumatism, sciatica, and insomnia. The author also offers a complete guide to the traditional forty-day beauty treatment as practiced in India that includes a wide variety of recipes for fragrant massage oils prepared from rejuvenating herbs and spices along with formulas for nourishing facial creams and masks and beautifying clay baths. HARISH JOHARI began his training the the principles of Ayurveda at an early age, studying in his native India with several different vaidyas, or traditional Ayurvedic practitioners. He is also the author of numerous books, including The Healing Cuisine, Tools for Tantra, Chakras, Numerology, and The Healing Power of Gemstones.

His books are always excellent and this is no exception. Having been trained in authentic Ayurvedic massage therapies, I can definitely commend and the explanations, diagrams and techniques here as being genuine and practical.I read and pratcised from the first edition many moons ago whilst my love for Ayurveda was blossoming, and I can tell you you feel like a novice to expert after going through and putting into practise what is taught here, though practical, professional guidance is always recommended, you will definitely learn a lot from this book; the theory, amazing health benefits and the pratcical applications.Starting with guiding principles of massage, Harish Johari goes further to explain the benefits, to whom, and with what oil formulas are best and includes contraindications (when certain health problems would not benefit or should not have massage). The book is well illustrated and has points to hit and start from along each technique and stroke. The oils and formulas are not difficult to obtain and make, being basic oils and can usually be easily found in an Indian grocery store or nowadays, with the great push for Organic oils, on the internet! In summary, this is a beautifully presented, well-written and crystal-clear explanation which makes this wonderful science and art truly accessible to the layman and also has great wisdom and facts for the practitioner!

Traditional indian massage technique

E. · 30 January 2015

I have tried Ayurvedic massage (abhyanga) at the local store and loved it. Therapist placed me on traditional indian massage table (made out of beautifully crafted wood) and used sesame seed oil with traditional Indian herbs to soothe my aching muscles. I am also esthetician and I love body treatments that help detoxification and exfoliation process. I was intrigued to learn more about this technnique and for that reason, I purchased the book.Book has very detailed explanations of how to perform this type of a massage and it also has pictures that explain hand placement and movements, which is very helpful. Some people who are more modest about the massage techniques may be off standish in adopting this technique or having this massage performed on their body. However, if one is open minded, remember that this massage technique has been used in India for thousands of years and there is certainly some merit to it providing health and relaxation benefits to the human body.I am not sure that therapists in the West would perform all movements described in the book on all clients, because some of them may appear as overstepping client's personal boundaries. Book is very helpful about explaining the massage, the technique, sequencing and movements that help relieve particular ailments.
