Fiberglass Repair: Polyester or Epoxy

Description:

Fiberglass Repair, Second Edition is filled with easily accessed information, all aimed at giving a determined boat owner the necessary skills and the confidence to tackle typical fiberglass repairs, using either polyester or epoxy resin. In every boating area, hundreds of fiberglass boats--twenty, thirty, even forty years old--are still afloat, still providing all the fun of boating because their owners were willing and able to do the repair and restoration. David and Zora Aiken are long-term liveaboards who have spent a lot of time in boatyards, practicing the fiberglassing techniques outlined in this book. They have written six books with boating and outdoor themes.

About the Author

David Aiken grew up in a small Michigan town and moved to Chicago, where he apprenticed with one of the largest commercial art studios in the city. Eventually he opened his own studio for illustration and design. He and his wife, Zora, left Chicago for a one-year trip on a small sailboat, and the year became more than twenty years of meandering by boat, allowing both to devote time to writing and painting. David sold paintings through galleries and private showings at yacht clubs and resort hotels, while continuing to do editorial illustration and commercial projects. Aiken is an artist member of the American Society of Marine Artists and has coauthored and illustrated cruising and camping books with his wife. He is the author of Fiberglass Repair and the illustrator of Chesapeake ABC, Chesapeake 1-2-3, Chesapeake Rainbow, Finding Birds in the Chesapeake Marsh, Majesty from Assateague, Quiet Please―Eaglets Growing, and Where Did All the Water Go?

Great book

L. · 29 September 2011

I am one of those who really likes this book. It is an especially good book for one beginning with fiberglass. One reviewer said that most of this information is available through West Systems, but I'm not so sure. I've read both and much prefer Aiken's book. For example, Aiken takes the reader through comparisons of using polyester versus epoxy; West Systems doesn't do that. Aiken describes lots of products, and of course, West doesn't do that. The West Systems information is first rate. I just like this better and it's worth the price of the book in my opinion.Aiken's book is clear, straight forward, and covers the waterfront for repairs big and small. I highly recommend this book and like it a lot.

Good for a beginner

Although not very comprehensive, it is perfect for the novice. No great delving into chemical compositions, but the information is all there to do a good job. Covers the use of epoxies as well.

Excellent Book For Beginners

D.W. · 4 July 2012

I am someone who knows virtually noting about fiberglass. I was looking for a book that would explain the subject and explain the steps on how things are accomplished. I looked over MANY books here at Bolo and finally found this one. Going primarily on the reviews I bought it and was very happy that I did. It does a great job of explaining the various types of fiberglass and how to work with them. I haven't had the time to obtain the materials, but I feel confident that I'll be able to now work with fiberglass because of the information in this book. In my opinion this book is perfect for beginners into the world of fiberglass. I'm looking forward to getting started!

Pretty good but it’s a knock off

A.C. · 12 October 2024

Overall this book is very similar to the West System publication, I looked up the publication dates and West System was earlier. Clearly the earlier publication was taken as a template for this book because even the illustration style is effectively identical. You’ll find a product line that effectively also copies the West System line for less $ on this site. If you can open a business account at West Marine you’ll probably get a better deal there. If, like me, you just need to fix some fiberglass (in my case on a vintage trailer) you’ll be better off with the knock off products from here because this can get pricey. As to the book, if you own one don’t bother with the other as they are near identical. There are complaints that the West System book only covers their system but it’s a good enough system to have spawned copycats, and it’s not going to take much research figuring out what similar products you can use instead.
