Status Factory: The Art of Ron English

Description:

In his paintings, English perverts and subverts the establishment, poking fun at religion, consumerism, and blind obedience to popular culture. He uses humour as a wake-up call, and renders it with meticulous brush strokes. Ron English populates alternate versions of """"The Last Supper"""" and """"Guernica"""" with cartoon characters, drops camouflaged clowns on dinosaurs, and births incredible creatures from his fertile imagination. In addition to over 180 images from his paintings, Status Factory includes over 100 photographs of English's street art installations.

About the Author

One of the most prolific and recognizable artists alive today, Ron English has bombed the global landscape with unforgettable images, on the street, in museums, in movies, books and television. English coined the term POPaganda to describe his signature mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, from superhero mythology to totems of art history, populated with his vast and constantly growing arsenal of original characters. English blends stunning visuals with the bitingly humorous undertones of America's Premier Pop Iconoclast.

H. · 10 December 2020

Look out real world, Ron's taking over!

J.T. · 28 July 2014

Incredible and surreal are the words that I can use to describe Ron English's subversive works. The way he infiltrates the consumer world and turns it upside down with fake products and scathingly funny renditions of our favorite pop icons quite a rib tickler. From a morbidly obese Ronald McDonald to Cap'n Cornstarch, Ron English makes use of his phrase Popaganda. With nothing left untouched or sacred, Mickey Mouse suddenly becomes a martyr crucified on a credit card mousetrap, Marilyn Monroe's breasts, and a gas-masked executioner. Minnie Mouse is featured elsewhere with her head placed upon a voluptuous woman's nude body. The grin series including Charlie Brown and the Teletubbies is sure to be frightening with grin so wide it exposes skull.Among Ron's many hilarious remakes of pop influenced artwork are staple creatures such as the three eyed, two faced, three eared (sometime three breasted) Bunnny and his titular cowgirls who are anthropomorphized cows who in one instance is seen milking themselves for the obese Ronald McDonald (called McSupersized).KISS fans will definitely revel in Ron's madness as he paints KISS into everything from classic paintings to his children as band members. Even classical art is shot at, with the Da Vinci's famous Last Supper featuring the cast of South Park (satan included) and the entire cast of children's cereal characters in obese form.In all there is something for everyone in this book. And it's hard enough to believe most of what you see is actually a painting! Most times you swear it's a photograph because of Ron's ability to capture things with extreme precision. Even the section on how he creates his works might inspire those of us out there to pick a camera and a paint brush. Overall I enjoyed the madness, it was worth every penny :D.
