This book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the on-going conflict in the Middle East. It is a clear and concise account of the historical background to the current situation in Gaza and the West Bank. It is an excellent starting point to understanding what seems to be a complex subject, but which becomes more easily understood as a result of Ilan Pappe's lucid and straightforward recounting of events.The author displays great courage in swimming against the tide by exposing the cynical & brutal treatment of Palestinians displaced from their homeland by Zionists. He is proof that, despite all the evidence to the contrary in present day Gaza, there are decent Jews with a conscience and concern for justice and the upholding of human rights. I salute Ilan Pappe for his stance and I cannot wait to read more of his books.

There is no such thing as a fully objective book on Palestine. This one doesn't really try but it does honestly state its perspective. It is explicitly and assertively pro-Palestinian but is not in (my view) antisemitic, he is hard on Zionism but he clearly separates Ziomism from being Jewish. There is of course the question of what Zionism actually means today, such a discussion is beyond the scope of a ‘very brief history’ of the conflict. Further there are those that assert (erroneously) that anti-zionism is de facto antisemitic.Pappe sets out from the beginning what he intends to do in the book, and sticks to it. A reader can decide in the first few paragraphs if they have the stomach for it; it is not pretty. Anyone harbouring any positive regard for the IDF or the Israeli government is going to find it tough, but they, more than anyone, need to read it.Pappe sets out to explain the road map that led to the Hamas attack on October 7th as part of a historical process. He condemns it, without reservation, but believes it was almost inevitable given the history of Palestine.The main theme is centred around the nature of Israel's colonisation of Palestine which he terms “settler colonisation”. I found this helpful, and distinguished it from other forms of colonialism and gave clarity to how it has impacted on Palestinians.There are however a few things I take issue with.Firstly he characterises early Zionism as a bit mad; citing followers including anti-semites (keen on moving Jews anywhere far away) and pious Christians (who believed establishment of Zion would speed up the rapture). I don't doubt there were fringe elements with questionable motives (what movement doesn't?) but fundamentally early Zionism's main ideology was clearly an attempt to come to terms with two millennia of unrelenting antisemitism in Europe. Antisemitism is by far the oldest racism, it has extremely deep roots and many normally progressive people question its relevance or regard it as a lesser form of racism. Some aspects of European antisemitism are so ingrained in our culture they frequently go unobserved by non jews. Whatever else you say about Zionism it did have a powerful logic, nothing else was working.Secondly I felt it skimmed over the impact of Nazism and the holocaust. Before the holocaust Zionism was a relative pipe dream, After it, and especially with Britain and America closing the door to mass resettlement, Zionism looked like the only road to salvation. From the perspective of a death camp survivor, Zionism would have looked like a very good option.Thirdly, in the conclusion the Palestinian cause is described entirely as a liberation movement. To me that is an over simplification. Palestine has been used by Iran and others in their brand of anti-imperialism and Jihad. To see Hamas as liberators without reference to antisemitism, jihad, or as a tool of external powers is in my view a serious omission. There is little evidence Iran regards the day to day welfare of Palestinians as any more important than the Israeli state does, and Hamas has no qualms about using its own population as a human shield (especially dangerous given the disregard of the IDF to Palestinian casualties). Hamas and many other fighters on the ground are not simply freedom fighters to describe them as such is blatantly inaccurate.That said, this is a good piece of work, well written by someone with a lot of knowledge. It is determinedly pro-Palestinian, it asserts the perspective felt by the victims without the prejudices all too common in many commentaries of this appalling war.

With events in Gaza becoming increasingly dire, this is a good time to be reminded that there is a context to the conflict that goes back over 100 years. Ilan Pappe has written a short, concise but highly informative account that readers will find invaluable - particularly his emphasis on the nature of settler-colonialism and how this has driven the violence in the region. As he says at the end of the book:" It is only when Israel accepts the reality of its past , and of its closeness to its immediate geographical neighbours, that it can be part of forging a better future for historical Palestine and for the Middle East as a whole. We hope that day comes in our lifetimes."

Not knowing much about history it is hard for me to tell how accurate this book is. However, the numbers of Jews now in Israel/Palestine compared with pre 1947 speaks for itself. A Jewish historian might have a very different view of things and I, for one, wouldn’t know who is right.

I bought this in an to attempt to better understand what is happening in Gaza (2025).This is a particularly good primer from a well respected academic and historian based in a very good UK University; I am a former University lecturer in a different subject area & another UK University; and as such I understand good work that is well researched. This is very good and has helped me form an opinion regarding the actions going on in Gaza.

Should be required reading for anyone who when presented with the facts of the genocide in Gaza says “they started it” or “after October 7th they had it coming”.Goes back to roots of the Zionist movement at the end of the 19th century, stops along the way at the Balfour declaration (in which the British promise a Jewish state but not at the expense of the Arabs living in Palestine).It does make depressing reading. The continuing drive of Zionists to expel Palestinians from their land using terror and force which has been Israeli policy since before the Nakba of1948. The genocide today has been made possible by dehumanising Palestinians. The US, UK, France and USSR all helped along the way to make Israel the apartheid state it is today. Successive governments do not care that what they do is against international law and they tarnish opponents with the antisemitic brush whenever people criticise them.The author is an Israeli historian. Five stars.

Incredibly easy to read and understand, explaining a fairly complex and misunderstood situation with impeccable clarity. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to understand the conflict, starting from its very beginning.

Das Buch liefert eine gute Zusammenfassung der Geschichte Israel/Palästinas des letzten Jahrhunderts in einem post-kolonialen Kontext. Die frühe Geschichte, die Hauptexpertise des Autors, nimm dabei mehr Raum ein als die jüngere. Das Buch ist sehr empfehlenswert für alle die gerne ihr Verständnis des Israel/Palästina Kriegs vertiefen möchten, ohne dabei auf 20 dicke Bücher zurückgreifen zu müssen. Es wird mit vielen Mythen und Verklärungen aufgeräumt und ziemlich Klartext geredet.
