The Blues: A Visual History: 100 Years of Music That Changed the World

Description:

Charting the history of the blues from its rural roots in the American South, and focusing on the key musicians and singers who brought it recognition worldwide, The Blues: A Visual History is a unique and fully illustrated account of the development of the blues. This deceptively simple, 12-bar musical form has become the common denominator that has driven the popular music of the last hundred years. As John Lee Hooker put it: ""The music we play . . . that music is the roots. Rock music, everything else, is like a branch on the same tree. It all comes from the Blues.

About the Author

Mike Evans is a musician, editor, and author whose books include the best selling Elvis: A Celebration, and Ray Charles: The Birth of Soul. Consultant editor Robert Gordon is a Grammy Award-winning writer and filmmaker specializing in the music of the American south, and Scott Barretta is a blues specialist writer, broadcaster, and lecturer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for Blues fans

J.D. · 12 September 2025

A well presented and entertaining read, which covers all Blues styles, origins and exponents. I loved reading about the artists I’ve been listening to for decades, some of whom I was lucky enough to see live. The illustrated history sections are brief and digestible, as well as informative, and all my favourite musicians are included. I like the Playlist suggestions and felt quite smug to own many of the records and tracks suggested. Also like the pseudo tatty cover and the overall design, photographs, profiles, quotes, and the generous text length given to the real giants of the genre. It really does span a century of the Blues as it has evolved right up to the present day. Can’t wait to dip into this superb book again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully illustrated and informative book

J.W. · 23 March 2016

A beautifully illustrated and informative book, which features blues artists of every era from pioneers like Robert Johnson, to newer stars like Keb' Mo. The foreword is by Marshall Chess, Chicago veteran of the legendary Chess record label. Appropriately enough. This book is a must for any true Blues fan, and I would highly recommend it- brilliant.
