The SS: A Warning from History

Description:

The best known but least understood organ of the Nazi state, the SS grew from a minor politician's small, unpaid bodyguard into a force which dominated the racial, cultural and professional spheres of the most powerful empire Europe has ever seen. Often referred to as 'the state within a state', the SS was Heinrich Himmler's personal fiefdom and its influence pervaded all walks of German life, both private and public. Its tentacles extended into the army and police, the business world and of course the death camps.

The author reveals Himmler to be a man despised but indulged by Hitler who was obsessed with crackpot theories of Germanic mythology and deeply involved in the Final Solution. He assesses the career of Reinhard Heydrich, who put the organisational muscle and ruthlessness into the SS. The Totenkopt Brigade, set up specifically to run the concentration camps and death camps, is examined, as is the Waffen-SS, the military formation which killed thousands of Jews and partisans across Eastern Europe and fought bitterly against the Allies in Normandy.

The postwar story of the SS is also outlined, from clandestine organisations of former SS men to the activities of ex-Nazis today. Supported by photographs and the words of former SS men, their close friends and colleagues, Guido Knopp brings back to life a generation whose fanaticism and violence shaped the identify of the Third Reich.

This should be part of the national curriculum in all countries. Everyone should read this masterpiece. The worst horror story you will ever read. It's beyond horrendous how these seemingly normal people could turn into such sadistic butchers of their fellow humans. The book is broken up extremely well and is eminently readable thanks to its prose and how the chapters are set out with greyed out quotations and oral histories interjected between them. An absolute must read although some of it will remain with you that isn't nice at all. The holocaust was worse than you think. Read it.

A very well and thoroughly researched publication. Guido Knopp at his best, although his documentaries on the TV are even better.Very informetive and detailed history of the SS from begining to end. After reading the book I visited the site of the Gestapo headquarters in Berlin which now holds a permanent exhibition called Topography des Terrors. Everything falls into perspective.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing

I bought this book to further my knowledge of Reinhard Heydrich and the role he played in the Nazis' Final Solution. I am a history student and as Heydrich features in my dissertation I was eager to get this book seeing as it had a whole chapter dedicated to the man. However, there is precious little information about Heydrich and the conception of the Reich Security Main Office under him. There is no use of sources, such as the orders Heydrich gave to the Einsatzgruppen when the Nazis invaded Poland. Unfortunately, the same can be said of the rest of the book. Although the sensationalist style (it is written by a journalist) may be enjoyed by some people, I personally found the writing style to be boring and presumtuous. There are very few historical arguments included and what the author may term as primary sources (from relatively unknown sources!) are inserted within the text in grey boxes, seemingly at random! This makes it difficult to keep the flow of the text going and is annoying as they are sometimes unrelated to the main topic. If you know little or nothing about the SS and want to improve your knowledge then this book might be worth dipping in to, but don't bother spending too much time on it. There are so many well written and informative books written on this subject and I would recommend all of them above this. If, like me, you know quite a bit about this subject then steer clear of this book.

The true story of the Waffen-SS

This is an excellent examination of the SS and the Waffen-SS. It shows the true depth of evil that man is capable of.That the Waffen-SS was engaged in one of the biggest genocides in recent time in beyond doubt. Read this book and you will also have no doubts. This is a good companion to Goldsworthy's Valhalla's Warriors which examines the Waffen-SS on the Eastern front and the crime they committed.Valhalla's Warriors: A History of the Waffen-SS on the Eastern Front 1941-1945
