60 Years of Wildlife Photographer of the Year: How Wildlife Photography Became Art

Description:

The most memorable and beautiful pictures from six decades of the world’s most prestigious wildlife photography competition.

This landmark volume captures the diversity of life on Earth and celebrates the technical innovations and creative ingenuity which have made nature photography an art form.

Featuring more than 230 images, with 20 from the past five years, this sumptuous edition presents many of the greatest nature photographs of all time. It also charts the development of nature photography from the first hand-held cameras and the colour film revolution of the 1960s to the technological developments of the last decade – including low-light automatic focusing and faster burst rates for capturing motion, as well as camera drones and macro-probe lenses, which allow for photography at the largest and the smallest scales.

An incredible variety of styles, skills and approaches are on show, reflecting the many and varied ways of viewing and interpreting the natural world. Award-winning pictures include groundbreaking portraits, breathtaking aerial shots, otherworldly underwater imagery and revelatory close-up exposures. The pictures are accompanied by text that puts the photographs in context, explaining their importance and revealing the vision, talent, passion and technique of the world’s leading photographers of wildlife and the natural environment.
