5.0 out of 5 stars great book

M.C. · 17 March 2014

This book is excellent, very informative. My son has been diagnosed with SPD, and I've read 'Out of Sync Child' by Carol Kranowitz, so alreday knew a bit about the condition. Lucy Millar has a wonderfully easy style of writing without talking down to you. You can tell she has worked with numerous (probably hundreds) of parents, and can identify with their concerns and questions.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for any family with a child suffering from Sensory processing disorder

A.c. · 15 January 2014

Recommended by the OT for my son. A must read for any parent with a child suffering from sensory processing disorder. I could completely relate to it and felt great comfort that I wasn't alongout there or upset that I had misdiagnosed my son for so long as I genuinely had not heard about this subject before or any of the people I know.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good informative book with information on research into SPD

Good informative book with information on research into SPD.Not difficult to understand. Has chapters on ADHD and ASD with SPD which is useful.it is an AMERICAN book howecer and is written with an illustrative case story for each subtype of SPD which was a bit sentimental and also very simplistict. It had NO info about children being mixed subtypes like my son and no information on seekers who benefit from intense input as apparently these are "very rare"- no use if thats what you have!Lots of self promotion about the "star" centres that she runs across USA and the online courses they do -this may be helpful for some esp American readers.Again had information on what assessments American children are entitled too and how to access them and tips on "choosing a therapist" which does not not happen on the nhs - its pot luck unless you go privately.Still a useful book for parents looking to understand SPD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wealth of information coming from the SPD guru

C.D. · 30 August 2013

For anyone just beginning to try to understand this very common difficulty in both mainstream and special needs children, this is the SPD bible. It's a complex need to understand and this book explains this complexity very well. As a teacher I found it very readable, and have lent it to parents too. However, I think generally as a first text for a parent, it may be a little too heavy. You would have to use your judgement on this. I would very highly recomend it though.

This is a great book, that is an absolute must read if you have children who appear to have difficulties with the everyday routine. I learnt so much from this book and ended up understanding my children better.

A must for parents with children with sensory issues or on the autistic spectrum, the only place I got any useful ideas to help and a better understanding of what it's like for my son.

5.0 out of 5 stars For those struggling with behaviour that is not quite autism or ADHD, this book might hold some answers

M.A. · 11 October 2009

My son is going through assessment for a Sensory disorder, and this book helped me understand what it is, and what behaviour this relates to. This book is clearly set out and explains everything in laymans terms, giving diagrams and check lists to help you identify if your child falls into any of the different sensory disorder possiblities. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs clarity on these ideas, which are new - but are thankfully moving away from labelling every child with ADHD or Autism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Food for thought

C.h. · 15 March 2014

This book was recommended by my son's paediatrician and is well worth a read. It was quite thought provoking and made me think about things that I had previously not considered mentioning to the occupational therapist.

Have you ever wanted to be a 'little mouse in the corner' to see what life is really like for children with a Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)? You can do that through Lucy Miller's new book, Sensational Kids. This book is truly sensational. I've been recommending it to a lot of the parents and teachers of students I service.Part I includes the basics about Sensory Processing Disorder (background, symptoms and warning signs, assessment and diagnosis, treatment and strategies). Part II - Living with Sensational Kids is our opportunity to read about "a day in the life of" children with a Sensory Processing Disorder. In this section, Lucy introduces 5 case studies (typically developing child and four young children who each have a different Sensory Processing Disorder -- over-responsive, under-responsive, sensory-seeking, and dyspraxia). The section continues with these same children at an older age. Part III goes beyond the basics and includes the science of SPD, combination disorders, causes and prevalence, intervention methods and treatment effectiveness, and a personal message to parents. This book could have been called "Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Sensory Processing Disorder but were Afraid to Ask." Not only is it informative, but it's very easy to read. I highly recommend the book.

Made my child make sense

A. · 1 May 2014

Anyone who's wondering if their child has SPD or is in the process of trying to determine what works best NEEDS this book. It is written so clearly and for so many different groups. It has ideas for social, academic, and at home. It describes all the different types of SPD really well and I had many "AHA" moments while reading. Have passed this title around to many people already!

Nice book
