Games People Play: The Psychology of Human Relationships: The basic handbook of transactional analysis.

Description:

We think we're relating to other people-but actually we're all playing games.

Forty years ago,
Games People Play revolutionized our understanding of what really goes on during our most basic social interactions. More than five million copies later, Dr. Eric Berne's classic is as astonishing-and revealing-as it was on the day it was first published. This anniversary edition features a new introduction by Dr. James R. Allen, president of the International Transactional Analysis Association, and Kurt Vonnegut's brilliant Life magazine review from 1965.
We play games all the time-sexual games, marital games, power games with our bosses, and competitive games with our friends. Detailing status contests like "Martini" (I know a better way), to lethal couples combat like "If It Weren't For You" and "Uproar," to flirtation favorites like "The Stocking Game" and "Let's You and Him Fight," Dr. Berne exposes the secret ploys and unconscious maneuvers that rule our intimate lives.
Explosive when it first appeared,
Games People Play is now widely recognized as the most original and influential popular psychology book of our time. It's as powerful and eye-opening as ever.

Review:

5.0 out of 5 stars I particularly like how Eric Bern gives realistic scenarios that I instantly ...

T. · 29 July 2016

This is a fabulous book. When I was younger, my mum used to read the old 'I'm OK, you're OK' series. When I started questioning myself to see whether things that were being told to me that they were my fault, I realised that this was part of this whole transactional analysis model of critical parent, nurturing and child roles that we all play in society. It is a way of recognising that you are able to change how you feel about yourself by slowly changing your role in this triad.I particularly like how Eric Bern gives realistic scenarios that I instantly identified with. It make me understand the underlying fears of the oppressor and gave practical advice to turn things around. In reality, it won't change things overnight, but it will certainly help to empower you and make you progressively stronger. Today, I realise that that was the 'old me'. I am a far stronger person now. I thank people like Dr Eric Bern and others for helping me to escape the lower points of my life.Although this is a book based in transactional analysis, it is well written and is an enjoyable read. I would recommend it to anyone who has ever gone through times when others were trying to tell you what you should think about yourself as a form of psychological control. Please let me know if this review has been helpful. Feel free to make useful suggestions for improvement. Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Or: how to spot a creep at 20 paces.

A. · 26 August 2014

Insightful! I bought a second copy and gave it to a friend with the surtitle, 'How to spot a w*nker'.Eric Berne created Transactional Analysis, and this was one of his first texts on the subject. It details particular behaviours and strategies used by people to get the outcome they want, whether that's gaining attention, legitimising their anger, or something genuinely positive like helping others. It also helped me to become aware of 'games' I play, and to unlearn some of that social programming. It's a provocative text, not meant to be taken as the last word in psychology, but a fascinating and useful way of exploring the hidden needs and agendas behind behaviour.

I got this book as I am studying Transactional Analysis, where best to start but with this book, written by the maker of TA. It's a great book if you are interested in TA or not, though can be quite hard to read as a base for your interest (I would recommend I'm OK You're OK also) < & possibly read that first or with this. All in all great for anybody interested in learing about themselves and others with regards to communication and the games we all play...

3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed if Im honest

A. · 1 April 2012

This book just isnt as interesting as I was hoping it would be.... small print and I just could not get into it at all....The book is clearly very old and it did have a little bit of Chinese hand writing on the front page inside the book??The front cover is also that faded at first I thought I had recieved a different book to the one I had ordered....This isnt a book I would recommend to be honest..... I feel there are so many others out there that are much more interesting for the same thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars One for the kids!

D.C. · 10 September 2012

OK, I'll admit that if your kids read this, they could end up running rings round you, but at least they will know why they are doing it.This is a classic best seller about real world Transactional Analysis, a fascinating subject in itself. You will be surprised at how early your behavior as parents affects your child's emotional development, and if you catch yourself in time it may even stop you doing them further damage. I believe all parents should have a copy of this given to them with their first child.

Its good to see from outside the normal box.I ordered this book as im starting a distance learning a-level and eventually degree.I think it was a nice place to start for some reading prior to the course.M.D.Brown25North Yorkshire

Although some of the content feels a little dated, this little book has certainly helped me to avoid playing along with some common "mind games" that I would otherwise have played into like a sucker. Not only are there examples of loads of these games, but practical advice on how to avoid falling into the traps set by people!(As an aside, if you combine the game-recognition in this book with the techniques in Nonviolent Communication, you can help others and yourself).

It will take multiple readings to truly comprehend the book. The language is bit complicated. The book is deeply intertwined so as you proceed with reading remember the learnings of the previous chapters. Concepts may seem vague, perplexing but it will make sense, ultimately. This book will drive extreme opinions from readers, overwhelming majority will either like it & agree or dislike & disagree. It is my humble request to fellow readers to please keep your opinions to yourself and don't unnecessarily put them here in reviews. Let future readers enjoy the book without any bias. Happy Reading. The pages and print quality of the book is good.

Fantastic Read

K.P. · 3 September 2023

Though this book was written decades ago, it's easily relatable to current times. Many may consider this pop or pseudo-psychology now, I still believe its content is relevant. In my opinion, the author wrote from a position of the reader having at least a general understanding of psychology and psychiatry, which he has stated in the book. So, because I have this understanding, I don't have much difficulty with this theory. There are times when the author mentions something that warrants me to either reread a previous section to gain clarity or to be patient for the author to provide clarity in an upcoming section.I felt the first half of the book was a lackluster read, but it's important to stick with it and understand it prior to moving forward.I was recommended this book by my mother, who was exposed to it when it was published, which helped her improve her interactions with others. I appreciate the recommendation because I am also experiencing the benefits. Therefore, I also recommend this book to others.

Raccomandato!
