I Am the Wolf: Lyrics and Writings

Description:

With a voice that Pitchfork has called "as scratchy as a three-day beard yet as supple and pliable as moccasin leather," former Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age vocalist Mark Lanegan draws frequent comparisons to wounded masters of doom like Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and Leonard Cohen. But Lanegan's talents aren't limited to his vocal skills. His lyrics are on par with the best of them, exploring with Blakeian insight the stark and scorched emotional terrain that exists somewhere beyond sadness, addiction, trauma, and spiritual longing. Now, for the first time ever, the reclusive singer presents a comprehensive look at his lyrics, the stories behind them, and the making of his albums as well as photos, insights, and ephemera from a long career in rock 'n' roll, I Am the Wolf gives fans a rare and candid glimpse into the inner workings of a living-and singular-rock legend.

5.0 out of 5 stars There is no morphine I'm only sleeping

I've followed this man like a stalker since his Queens of the Stone Age days.Somewhat late to the party I then worked backwards through his extensive catalogue and eagerly awaited his every release.I've seen him on all of his subsequent tours and even met him a few times after shows.Mr Lanegan is a man of few words. Choosing instead to let his music speak for him. The lyrics are always dark, brooding and unbelievably powerful. Somehow reading them without the music behind them enhances their potency. What I really enjoyed however are the little snippets that preface the albums, the little hints at the man behind the music. As biased as I am, what the world needs is a Mark Lanegan autobiography. An unflinchingly honest account of how he ended up painting the big brother house (only to be fired) and why he ended up in hospital with pipes where pipes really shouldn't be.I'd buy it in a heartbeat

5.0 out of 5 stars Extreme bias

I've followed Mark Lanegans music since 1989 so forgive my extreme bias in this review. I've had the good fortune to sit down to lunch with the big man and I can tell you that he gives little away (by this I mean "of himself" not his appetite, he ate two pies!) so to have this beautifully made book that gives a brief insight into each of his albums plus the lyrics to every song he has ever released as a solo artist is nothing short of miraculous.Don't expect a biography or to have hours of gripping yarns. This is a lyric book for real Lanegan fans who know that Mark will never sanction or write any kind of biography although we all wish he would!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book from the great man.....

I read it from cover to cover in about an hour! Played a few of Mark's songs to accompany the read, obviously. It's a beautiful book, with chronological lyrics not only from his solo work but also his collaborations (e.g. Mad Season, Isobel Campbell), and a narrative from Mark (describing his writing processes, state of mind etc.) at various points.I guess some photos and/or illustrations might have been nice, but that's a very minor quibble; what stands out are the beauty of Mark's lyrics and his humour, honesty and humility.I thoroughly recommend this book!

All Lanegan's fantastic lyricism as well as incites into each of his (fantastic) albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN enjoyable and emotional read

If like me you've grown up listening to The Screaming Trees then Mark Lanegan, reading these lyrics and the accompanying text, was a very moving experience. A book to quietly enjoy and savour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent from start to finish.

Beautiful!

I'm a Mark Lanegan Brazilian fan, I love his lyrics and songs, they've helped me think about life and see the world through other eyes in difficult times. It's hard not to be lost in thought when listening to Mark's songs, and this book, even with few details but helps us to have a better understanding of the situation that this author passed when writing each album. Very grateful for this release! Stay in the peace of our Lord, Mark Lanegan!

I’m glad I bought this book.

You know, Mark doesn’t write too much about himself in this book, but that’s just fine by me. We don’t need to know every single detail of our favorite musicians’ lives. I’m glad he shared what he wanted about himself, along with his lyrics.I wouldn’t be able to choose a favorite album, because I just really love so much of his work. But, I do find myself listening to Field Songs, Whisky For The Holy Ghost, and Phantom Radio quite a lot. His lyrics are so beautiful, and even making the darkness in them so sweet in some way. What I really love about him is that he is such a great songwriter and singer but reminds me of my own people from the working class, who I grew up around. And I suppose living here in Ann Arbor surrounded by people who came from more privileged backgrounds, I miss that kind of people.I genuinely appreciate his music, and I’m glad we have musicians like him. I appreciate that he put his lyrics into this book, and told a little about his experiences, and I really look forward to any other books Mark may put out.Thank you Mark for your music; it is a true friend to me. And for writing this book.
