The Devil's Music: History of the Blues

Description:

Superbly researched and vividly written, The Devil's Music is one of the only books to trace the rise and development of the blues both in relation to other forms of black music and in the context of American social history as experienced by African Americans. From its roots in the turn-of-the-century honky-tonks of New Orleans and the barrelhouses and plantations of the Mississippi Delta to modern legends such as John Lee Hooker and B. B. King, the blues comes alive here through accounts by the blues musicians themselves and those who knew them. Throughout this wide-ranging and fascinating book, Giles Oakley describes the texture of the life that made the blues possible, and the changing attitudes toward the music. The Devil's Music is a wholehearted and loving examination of one of America's most powerful traditions.

About the Author

In 1976, Giles Oakley helped produce the acclaimed five-part BBC documentary The Devil's Music, which resulted in this book. He has since coproduced numerous prime-time programs and series for BBC-TV and has contributed to many books and journals.

Bought this without realising it was tied in to the old BBC series of the same name which I watched not so long back on i-player. Goes into much more depth and detail than the programme and takes in not just the music but the background and history and the effects of changing times and locations on the Blues as it was and is played. Gives more space to the women of the Blues than many other similar themed books.Predictable as many blues stories and characters are if you have read a few books already, The Devils Music nevertheless contained many little nuggets of info and reminiscences that I had not come across before. There is an odd thickness of page and a grainy look to the print and the b&w picture plates that some may not like, but I found it to be kind of in keeping with the books style as a whole, so not sure if it is a deliberate effect or just cost cutting on the print run.Very satisfying read that had me reaching for my cd's more than once.

4.0 out of 5 stars I hate that. I wish they would put the photos ...

FactUal book with a history of where blues came from, discussion of lyrics and the histories of individual artists and collaborations. There is a collection of photographic plates in the middle of the book. I hate that. I wish they would put the photos in around the discussion of the subject. It would help break up some of the monotony of the text, as it is easy to put down and not pick up for a while. It's good to have an I pad handy whilst reading, so you can get you tube performances of songs by featured performers.

I have bought this for my son - an avid fan of all things New Orleans, especially the music. And this will be a perfect read for him and increase his desire to visit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant.

Excellent well written account of the social context in which blues music developed. Shame the print is rather poor quality and the pitures are rather poor quality. But excellent content.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Blues in depth - great research, great book!

R.H. · 7 September 2015

If you want to dig deep and get a real feel for the history of the blues then this is an ideal book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative but flawed.

P.C. · 22 May 2015

Very factual and informative. I feel the book is very let down by the photographs which are appallingly bad quality. They all look like 3rd generation photocopies that have been copied through tissue paper and then printed, too dark, onto the same type of paper as the text! Very unprofessional. Maybe, if another updated edition was planned, more care should be put into the images and their reproduction.

gives a good account of the social background. The text is mainly based on citations by musicians of the time. I makes for good reading maybe a bit repetitive.

The Devil's Music

J.O. · 4 November 2011

The Devil's Music: A History Of The BluesAs explained in the preface, this book was originally published in connection with a documentary film series made for BBC television in 1976. All I can say is that if the series was as entertaining and educational as Oakley's book (and I am sure it must have been), I deeply regret not having been able to see it on T.V. The best way of explaining why this book is indispensable to any fan of the Blues is to paraphrase the blurbs on the back. This book is almost unique in its approach in doing what should always have been obvious to all other writers on the subject: it makes clear that you cannot abstract Blues music, or the musicians who made it, from its American social and historical context. Oakley also shows that the Blues did not, and COULD not have evolved totally independently of, and uninfluenced by other forms of music (Jazz, etc) In addition to simply being a VERY good, very entertaining book about the Blues, another strong point in its favour is the excellent quality of the actual writing - something we can't always take for granted. This is a book you can't stop reading. Unfortunately, there is only one drawback. Presumably because of the quality of the paper it is printed on, the photographs in the middle are very poorly reproduced. All in all a great book thoroughly recommended.
