Satchmo: My Life in New Orleans (Da Capo Paperback)

Description:

"In all my whole career the Brick House was one of the toughest joints I ever played in. It was the honky-tonk where levee workers would congregate every Saturday night and trade with the gals who'd stroll up and down the floor and the bar. Those guys would drink and fight one another like circle saws. Bottles would come flying over the bandstand like crazy, and there was lots of just plain common shooting and cutting. But somehow all that jive didn't faze me at all, I was so happy to have some place to blow my horn." So says Louis Armstrong, a tough kid who just happened to be a musical genius, about one of the places where he performed and grew up. This raucous, rich tale of his early days in New Orleans concludes with his departure to Chicago at twenty-one to play with his boyhood idol King Oliver, and tells the story of a life that began, mythically, on July 4, 1900, in the city that sowed the seeds of jazz.

From the heart. Louis Armstrong writes as he plays. His book flows with optimism, enthusiasm and an unabashed truth that tells it just as it is with no apologies and doesn't need any. I read it as though his voice was narrating. A laid bare truth about being black in America, in the south in the early decades of the last century. GREAT READ!

5.0 out of 5 stars A slice of a musician's life and a slice of real history

The soul and character of Louis Armstrong just shines out in this book of his early life. There is no ego. He just tells it as he saw it, and man, he saw some stuff. And experienced most of it too. This guy is no angel but oh boy he should be counted as one of the most human of humans that ever walked the Planet. The backdrop of New Orleans in all its glory and gory times come right at you as do the hustlers, musician and ladies. Just wonderful if you have a mind to read it

4.0 out of 5 stars Wrote it himself!

Ein Goldstück.

T.D. · 9 October 2020

Louis Armstrongs Schilderung seiner Kindheit und Jugend in New Orleans 1900 - 1922.

Sooo interesting!

Louis Armstrong led an amazing life. To hear him tell of his early years in his own words provides insight you won't get elsewhere. A glimpse into a time long gone. Made me appreciate him and his contemporaries even more.

Un magifique livre

Très bien écrit, l'anglais se lit facilement (pour quelqu'un avec un niveau correct, mais pas bilingue non plus). Parfait pour se plonger dans l'ambiance de la NO

Very enjoyable read

Reading this book was like having Louis tell me about his childhood and the story of how he got started on his path to becoming a professional musician. He’s so down to earth and personable and I appreciate that they did not over edit this book. It reads as if he is speaking to you.

Excellent autobiography

H.S.v.L. · 4 October 2025

I'm very happy this came back into print although I'd have preferred it on Kindle. Louis Armstrong has led an interesting and what many would say extreme life, but what makes this autobiography unique is the simple and uncomplicated way that he writes down his experiences. Innocent almost. Within that the man is able to keep an excellent and interesting narrative. Highly recommended for any jazz lover and in particular of course, those interested in Satchmo. The print is a bit sloppy.
