Review:

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, and good read.

A very readable version of the New Testament. Includes maps and explanations of each book. Highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected

B.A. · 5 March 2022

Thought this was the same as Bishop Tom's excellent series of the "... for everyone" commentaries, so I was disappointed that it wasn't. It's actually his translation of the New Testament, with a small commentary at the start of each book.Nothing wrong with that, but I have many versions already.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Testament for Everyone.

A superb easy to read translation as you can expect from Tom Wright. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who finds traditional translations daunting.

Excellent, refreshing translation of the New Testament.

3.0 out of 5 stars Paperback not well designed

K.G. · 23 October 2025

I’m buying another copy in hardback to avoid the problems of the paperback. Just silly things- the names of the books are in the middle where it’s hard to read them; the margins are too small so the shadow of the centre-crease falls on the words. The book is interesting definitely- but this paperback edition is tricky to read.

More a quick review than a commentary

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for those who believe in Our Lady, Mary ever-virgin.

C. · 22 September 2020

I was excited to begin reading this translation of the bible because I thought it would make it easier to comprehend and therefore more accessible. However, I have only picked it up and already I am disappointed. Matthew 1:25 is translated inaccurately. The attached image is taken from book in question, "The Bible for Everyone". They have inserted the word "after" that changes the meaning entirely. The words "until after the birth of her son" are inaccurate and amount to sacrilege. Here is an explanation about how it should read.MATTHEW 1:25: “UNTIL SHE BORE A SON”The relevant verse is sometimes translated, “he [Joseph] had no relations with her [Mary] until she bore a son, whom he named Jesus.” The New American Bible translates the verse as follows: “He had no relations with her at anytime before she bore a son, whom he named Jesus,” This verse demonstrates that Joseph did not have sexual relations with Mary before Jesus’ birth, thus establishing the doctrine of Jesus’ virginal birth, The verse does not mean that Joseph had sexual relations with Mary after Jesus was born.

Refreshing translation

Tom Wright comes into his own in this complete text of the New Testament. Although I own the whole set of commentaries in the 'For Everyone' series - and the latest additions of Early Christian Letters and Revelation are very welcome - having the whole text of this series in one continuous edition is very welcome. The text is engaging and provides fresh insights into the powerful words of the New Testament. It does fulfil its task of encouraging a reader to read whole books at a time, rather than only the texts that the Lectionary sets down. At times the translation may seem to engage odd choices - for translation, regardless of how "literal" it attempts to be, will always involve choices - which are often unpacked in the commentary. If you find yourself frustrated, angered, or simply excited by this wonderful translation, then take the time to read through the multi-volume commentary set as well. Highly recommended.

An excellent contribution to a modern translation. I have found it valuable in personal reading and on the few occasions when I have been preaching to read from the translation. More than helpful.

Tom Wright's translation in one place is just brilliant. Who doesn't want another version of the New Testament to live with?

Great translation

This is a great translation; all that could make this better would be a hyperlinked contents page, rather than having to search through or put manual bookmarks in.
