The Greek Myths: The Complete and Definitive Edition

Description:

The definitive and comprehensive edition of Robert Graves's classic retelling of the Greek myths

'Icarus disobeyed his father's instructions and began soaring towards the sun, rejoiced by the lift of his great sweeping wings. Presently, when Daedalus looked over his shoulder, he could no longer see Icarus; but scattered feathers floated on the waves below...'

These are the greatest stories ever told - the labours of Hercules, the voyage of the Argonauts, Theseus and the minotaur, Midas and his golden touch, the Trojan War and Odysseus's journey home - brought together into one epic and unforgettable story.

Ideal for the first time reader, it can be read as a single page-turning narrative, while full commentaries as well as a comprehensive index of names make it equally valuable for anyone seeking an authoritative and detailed account of the spectacular stories that make up the bedrock of Western literature.

The Greek Myths is a classic among classics, a treasure trove of extraordinary tales and a masterful work of literature in its own right.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'The Greek Myths' Robert Graves

D. · 1 May 2012

I would highly reccommend this book to anyone interested in Classical Mythology; it is comprehensive and is very easy to use. You can use the references to find a specific myth, if you have a particular interest, or read it as an extentended collection of the stories. It contains all of the Greek myths together, and told very well. I would, however, caution academic or literary users, as if you need to know the sources for each myth Graves does not always reference them. For this kind of use, I would reccommend Pierre Grimal's 'Dictionary of Classical Mythology'. The book also contains a map of the Greek world and map showing sites mentioned in the text, helping you visualize and understand the relative geographies of the myths.I really like this book, and after buying my own copy bought one for a friend. A must for lovers of mythology.:D

4.0 out of 5 stars A definitive guide - but not for the dabbler

A.P.W. · 15 November 2013

This book has stood the test of time and you will soon see why. Robert Graves knowledge of Greek Mythology is very extensive. However, if you are looking for an easy read or some sort of introduction to Greek Mythology this is not the book for you. Unless you are a serious student of the subject it is extremely difficult to keep up with all the names and the endless relationships that seemed to have occurred. Even if you just read the myths and not the large amount of footnotes written by Robert Graves it is still fairly difficult to follow in places. Probably better as a source of reference than a book to read from cover to cover.

Book was too hard on my brain. I even tried to do a family tree to make it easy to remember which child belonged to whom. The book isn't what I expected ive got to page 112 and I dont think I can read anymore. Don't think this book is for me.

With the currant fashion amongst women authors for stories about female heroines from ancient Greece, Robert Graves's ”The Greek Myths",is the ideal companion. This scholarly work provides information about many of the characters being written about today.

It is just a good book

Enjoy reading it!

Highly recommended for mythology buffs.

I was hoping this book would further my knowledge on the details of Greek mythology. There was a slight concern that it may just be a collection of quotes from manuscripts leaving us to decipher the language for ourselves, but that was not the case at all. The book has a flow that explains the sequence of the Greek myths beginning from chaos, the creation and so on. The sources of the myths are all put together for you, the reader, so that we can follow it like a story. References prominently mentioned, should we want to research a particular myth. The quality of the physical book and print quality are okay, nothing exceptional. With more than 700 pages of information, a few illustrations placed as eye-catchers would have been nice, but that is a luxury I can live without. There are a couple of maps in there showing locations, which help bring the journeys to life.Delivered 5 days before the expected date, well packaged. A complete one stop resource for all your Greek myths and legends. For the price, it is a steal.
