Thank you so much Penelope Lively for this very readable “Gardening Book”. Loved every chapter and was sorry to finish this book. Will lend it to a friend then we can go through it again. Most of the gardens specially mentioned are in the South of England and Scotland doesn’t get much of a mention (this is where I live), but, Penelope Lively holds your hand gently walking you through various gardens and landscapes and you feel as if you’ve been there.

As a Penelope Lively fan and a keen gardener this was irresistible. Beautifully written as might be expected from such an author, reflective and extremely well informed it is right on every level. Lively takes us through fashion in gardening, history, influences all interspersed with family reminiscences. I learnt a good deal and enjoyed doing it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Charming But Too Broad And Brief

G.B. · 11 June 2018

I'll confess that I'm completely new to the writing of Penelope Lively. I picked this book up because the cover grabbed my attention and I had recently started gardening so was keen to read up on anything and everything to do with gardening. I was aware that this is not exactly a how-to guide, but more a summary of the author's own experience in gardens, the history of gardens, and even garden folklore.A lot of it does make for fascinating reading. I loved the chapters that explore gardens in literature and how the author deduces which poets/authors must have actually been gardeners by the detail in their writing. We also get a wonderful glimpse into gardens in different parts of the world and how gardening fashion has changed over time. What lets this book down is that it really is just a glimpse at everything. It feels less like a book on a particular subject and more like an extremely brief, and not entirely satisfying, introduction to lots of subjects. The writing is also full of slightly unfortunate 'facts' from the author about how men garden vs how women garden, which jobs men won't do, and which jobs only men will do. This includes one baffling declaration that men are messy gardeners, just as they are messy in the kitchen, never tidying up after themselves. As a man who now gardens (and bakes), I found these slightly discouraging and patronising. I shared some of the statements with the two women whose garden I look after and they found them hilarious. That aside, there is some genuinely interesting history and insight into this book and I couldn't help but find Lively's prose really charming. I also appreciated the little personal touches she spread throughout, such as how her own tastes in flowers have changed, and how she has adapted to different sized gardens/different climates. All in all, a pleasant enough book, but not one that I would ever revisit.

Lovely edition – from the cover to the endpapers. Love Penelope Lively in any format but this is a beautiful book in every sense, from Lively's lovely prose to the subject matter. Even if one didn't judge a book by it's cover – and this is a fine one – this would be a very good book indeed. A perfect present, too, but I'm not giving mine away.

A VERY Lively Look At Gardens in Life & Literature

e. · 25 May 2019

Penelope Lively, an 84-year old British writer best known for her novels, made waves last year when she tackled, of all things, gardens and their under-examined place in human history. It reads like an audio book -- you almost hear the author saying, "Oh, and THIS is why paintings, literature, politics and gardens all underwent a makeover just in time for Jane Austen to make wicked fun of the whole mishmash, then Tom Stoppard in a hit play 100 years later." A lovely Lively mind is at work here, starting with Eden and weaving an enchanting 160-p. backgrounder on, well, nearly everything that led to why and how we garden today. Warning: It's a great gift for someone you know. But don't open it anywhere, or you may just park it on the bedside table instead.
